So, I finally decided on what laptop I will be purchasing, the Dell Studio XPS. Now, I want a processor that can handle intensive multitasking. I was looking at the Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Quad Core Processor @ 1.6GHz (2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB Cache) and the Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T9600 (6M Cache, 2.80 GHz). The quad core is a bit more expensive then the dual so I was thinking if the duo was just as efficient I'd save a few hundred dollars. My question is, is the quad significantly faster and worth it?

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

well, as far as I know, 8 thread processing with i7 is waaay faster than 2 thread one, so in terms of multi-tasking, I think i7 is the best choice...

What programs are you using? Will you be doing work on battery? What is the price difference? I'm surprised that the 720QM is that much more expensive than the T9600 since they aren't much different in price from Intel, but then again I haven't checked Dell prices in a while.

Intensive multitasking, get i7-820QM. Or if you wanna be pro, get the i7-920XM and replace it yourself. But I think you gotta define "intensive", I mean some people think Internet + music + Word is multitasking, while others think encoding + imaging + CAD is.

The C2D is a good processor, should handle today's multitasking fine, but I think the i7s would just be a lot smoother and quite a bit faster depending on what you are doing.

You should also look into getting 4+ GB of RAM and a faster HDD or an SSD for a boost.

Actually, the 1.6GHz Core i7 720QM is faster than the T9600 across the board-

    LINK to CPU stats

    On PassMark-

    i7 720QM- 3,335
    i7 820QM- 4,003
    T9600- 1,964

    NO Contest! :D

core i7 is your best bet... but get the 820QM... 920QM is too overpriced.... but if you really want , get a Clevo D900F with core i7 desktop processors and GTX280M... it should own any core i7 mobile processor notebook... and would be perfect for you since u need a lot of CPU power...
