    Ok, I have two laptops;

My new laptop is a Dell XPS M1330.

My Old laptop is a Sony SZ220.

I like the Sony better and want to swap the processors between the two computers.

The Chipset on the Sony is a Intel 945GM. The Chipset on the Dell is Intel 965gm.

The processor on the Sony is Intel T2400. The processor on the Dell is Intel T7500.

Now, according to Intel's website, the Sony Motherboard (945GM) WILL support the upgrade to the Intel T7500.

However, apparently, the Dell 965GM WILL NOT support the downgrade to the Intel T2400.

This doesn't make sense to me. I could understand if it was the other way around, but it isn't. The processors are the same socket size.

My question, will the XPS motherboard support the downgrade to the T2400.

AND, can somone confirm for me that the Sony will support the upgrade.

Please don't give me advice if you are less than certain. I don't want to screw my computers up.

    Thank you!

    The XPS 1530 won't support the T2400 and the SZ220 won't support the T7500 !!
    Different CPUs, different sockets....

(For Sony CPU upgrade, check CPUs under Socket M, and for Dell CPU upgrade, check under Socket P CPUs)

Actually, I am 99.9% sure you will NOT be able to do the swap. The thing is, all Yonah processors (like your T2400) use the old Socket M. Socket M was also used for pre-2007/pre-Santa Rosa Merom processors, but with the release of Santa Rosa all Core2 mobile production was shifted to Socket P.

In other words, both an older Socket M version and a newer Socket P version of the T7500 exist. Since the XPS M1330 launched with Santa Rosa, logically it can be concluded that your T7500 processor must be Socket P and NOT Socket M like your T2400.

^ You need to read this guide as well....T7500 -> only Socket P.

Andy, just checked my facts and indeed you are right...all odd-numbered T7xxx are Socket P's.

But I guess it only confirms the impossibility of the proposed upgrade.

I don't know but the Napa Platform (945 family) is alien to Socket P. And the T7500 is Socket P. So, won't work.

You should be looking at a T7400/T7600 for similar performance.

I disagree with Andy, however I may be wrong since I'm not so knowledgeable in this area; I think the Sony should support an upgrade from Yonah to Merom, if you upgrade to the latest BIOS. Have you flashed the BIOS?

However, I don't think the XPS 1530 would work with a Yonah.

    EDIT: Nevermind, I'm wrong. :p

Wait, so if I buy the T7600, my sony will support that processor?

Yes, it should. Just make sure you have the latest BIOS.

The T2400 is old, so the SZ220 must be also old. :p
You should check out the BIOS updates' release notes, to see what enhancements were made.
OR, if you want to play it simple, buy a cheap T5200/T5300/T5500 from ebay (~$40), and flash the BIOS to the latest version, and try the upgrade. If it works, you could probably trade the CPU for a T7200/T7400. The T7600 is very expensive, and doesn't offer much gain over the T7200.
