My beloved Vostro laptop screen decided to flicker on me, then just go and is basically screwed! one month after my 3 year dell warranty expired!

What i would like to know how would i connect an external monitor and set it up if i can't see the screen as i would like to use this machine as a desktop replacement for simple tasks.

The laptop has linux mint 11 installed.

You need to pipe out the display by hitting Fn + whatever other key it is to display out. What Vostro model is it?

Try hitting Fn + F8. On my work maachine, a Dell Latitude, that's what I use to flip the external connection on.

When you buy a new monitor, it comes with a VGA and power cable which should be all you need.

As long as it has a VGA port, you can use it.

Why are we telling him to get a monitor?

Of course if you absolutely don't want to try and fix it I guess thats fine.

Theres a chance it might just be the inverter which would be cheap and easy to replace and get your screen working again. They're about 15$
