My dad's hp dv6707us, which he bought in 2008 just keeps cycling on and off without getting to post. The screen is dead and all notification lights are on. Even if you don't press the on switch, it will cycle like this.
He did mention that the screen turned different colors before the problem occurred. This reminded me of my dv6740us that had a failed gpu. Although the specs are quite different, with my dad's laptop having an amd turion and an Nvidia 7150 m gpu, could this yet be a symptom of the dreaded hp gpu failures. Or is it a symptom of a failed hdd, or maybe something else?

gpu overheating?
Have you tried cleaning the fan, new thermal grease?

Sounds like the infamous HP motherboard crap out. I had there hp machines crap out on me in one year. 2008 models too. Since then I have moved to Acer and never had a problem since. I now own several Acer machines of various breeds and all are working fine.

My motherboard had to be replaced as after about a year. Fortunately, I make it in just under warranty but it was a bear getting it serviced.
From what I read their quality has improved dramatically (although I'm still unsure if I will buy my next laptop from them), and is rated above Acer. -
Yeah, motherboard is probably dead. Sorry mate.
Laptop can't get to post. Help
