Hey guys my laptop crashed twice this week (blue screen) and I got the following information about it:

    BCCode: c5
    BCP1: 00000004
    BCP2: 00000002
    BCP3: 00000001
    BCP4: 828ED886
    OS Version: 6_0_6001

    I run vista 32 bit.

I've been browsing the web and people refer to drivers as being a cause. A friend of mine says that 9 out of 10 times its a hardware error and I need to replace my hdd.

Any thoughts? I've already ordered a new 500gb WD scorpio black hdd, but if its just a driver issue i'd hapily cancel that order and save myself 60€.

edit: when I used windows solution center it simply said that microsoft is aware of this problem and that it will be fixed...

I would guess a Windows Update driver install is causing this.

Look in the recently installed updates and see if there are any drivers that were installed.

If you can narrow it down like this - simply go to the device manager and Roll Back that driver to a previous version. You'll probably have to reboot.

When the system comes up again - go to Windows Update and search for new updates. If the driver comes up again; hide it.

    See:
B;ue screen with stop error code C5 - Microsoft Answers

    For possible further information.

I would put the HDD on hold for now... but if you do get it - install Win7 instead of Vista. :)

    Good luck.

Thx for your reply, I haven't found a way yet in device manager to use the previous driver but I did find this error: I need to install a driver for my PCI memory controler, maybe thats the cause of my problems?

Windows can't find a driver for it, and I only found a driver at some unknown website on which I have to subscribe (no way I'm subscribing/paying to get drivers).

Are we talking about the Acer 5920G?

I would go to the Acer website and download and install ALL the current drivers listed for your model. Even if you have drivers that are newer right now.

Once you have everything working in device manager, you can update (cautiously...) the drivers one by one to find which one is giving you the problem.

Yeah, time consuming - but worth it in the end for a truly stable system.

    Good luck.

Yes its the 5920G. Today I got a black screen again, saying my disk needs to be checked for consitency (had this a week ago too). It refered to all my saved files from the Witcher Enhanced Edition. When I tried to load a safegame just after the blackscreen my pc crashed (blue screen) and rebooted. The blue screen said something about a videodriver that needed to be updated Oo
I made a copy of my saved games two days before so... My new hdd should arrive tomorow or the day after and I won't have to start all over with that game luckely. (unless those copied savefiles were already corrupt two days ago).

I know the Witcher doesn't work well with vista but sadly I don't have the budget to buy W7 atm. (spend 100€ on the WD hdd and Norton Internet Security 2011).

I'm not so familiar with all these driver issues (I have the basic drivers on an axternal hdd and they always worked for me) so I hope this will solve my problems.

So I put in the new hdd today, and after I installed windows vista and did the first reboot my laptop jammed. I reset it, it rebooted, and then crashed: blue screen saying something about a crash dump.

This doesn't look good... I haven't even installed any new driver yet and still my laptop crashes >.< I don't know what to do.

To rule out O/S and/or drivers - try downloading and installing the (free/legal) Win7x64 w/SPI ISO and see if your issues continue.

If they are still present, I'm guessing the M/B is going. :(

No idea what SPI ISO means....

But as I said before windows 7 is not an option for me.

Just had another pc freez, followed by me pulling the plug, after which I got a black screen during booting saying my drive needs to be checked for consistency. So basicly I have the same problems (black and blue screens) as with my old hdd.

    He meant this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/win...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html

As tilleroftheearth said, when you get the new drive, you can test Win7 for 30 days (extendable to 180 days or something). That should give you an idea if computer would work with Win7 in the first place. Also pretty much reveals if the issue is hardware- or windows based. You can wipe the installation and replace it with XP later.

That black screen with hdd check is normal windows being careful. It basically comes everytime when windows detects something went wrong last time it shut down, so it's nothing to worry about.

you do know that you can google/bing each of those bugchecks to see if anyone has had and solved the problem.

No sense guessing or tearing your machine apart or (possibly) unnecessarily reloading your OS until you are sure.

Ok so I've been using my laptop for 2-3 days now without further problems. After I installed the new hdd and my pc got stuck two times I was really worried but its been running fine ever since.

I also installed service packs one and two, which weren't installed on my previous hdd to avoid certain problems which might already have been fixed with these updates.

If I'll encounter further problems I'll do as adviced: install a free version of windows 7 to determine if its a driver issue, or a dying motherboard.

I still have no PCI memory controller driver installed, but it isn't available on the acer website (unless I looked over it). Since it hasn't caused any problems yet i'll just ignore it.
