I have a Tooshiba Satellite Pro with CPU 1.44 and RAM 528MB. It worked for three years, but little by little it is getting slower and now I hardly can surf the web even. CPU test shows that the CPU health is as original.

I want to know what is the source of this decay? I should upgrade CPU or RAM? Or I should throw it away?

download free advanced system care and run it, it`s the easiest way speed up your notebook.

Run the startup-manger and disable any rubbish, slowing down your notebook, but be careful.

try to keep a 1/3 of your hdd empty, as your notebook uses the is to speed your notebook up.

also run spybot and super anti-spyware.

But 512mb is your problem you need at least 1024mb

You hard drive could be nearing capacity. Check your hard drive's capacity. If its almost full you could delete unneeded programs and then defrag it. Hope that helps. More ram should help too.

please substitute uninstall for delete in post #3.

Simply deleting directories will screw up a system. ALWAYS use the program-specific or system control panel uninstall facilities.

Your machine could also be having memory or hard drive problems of a physical kind.

Without someone competent placing their hand and eyes on the machine, it's hard to tell.

It could be a bunch of things... as stated previously is your HDD getting full? Have you tried running a surface test to make sure there aren't any physical problems with it? Alternately, what OS are you using? 512mb was pretty minimal when it came to XP... have you considered upgrading if you aren't maxed out (RAM isn't all that expensive)? What CPU are you using? Are you running any antivirus software? Is it current (both in version and updates)? When was the last time you checked for virii or malware? Have you ever defragged your HDD? Have you ever tried using a registry cleaner? The slow web surfing could be your video card. I noticed with my Tecra M4 that websites bogged down with flash content.

many thanks for your useful advices

    1. CPU is Celeron 1.46
    2. I checked the hard with various softwares and it is 100% healthy
    3. I know that 512RM is less for today's softwares, but I am talking about light usage; e.g. surfing the web by Google Chrome

When I open few windows of Google Chrome, or opening two softwares together, the CPU usage is 100% for few minutes and the computer is almost dead; and this occasionally happens.

A vague thing I found is that used space in my hard is 32GB, but the size of all folders in C is 18GB (the setting is to show hidden files too).

If you installed advanced system care, you could try this, it has a utility called smart ram in the utilitys tab, click on settings and tick all the boxes and reboot your notebook.

Yes I installed it, and there was no major problem in general scan (just few typical which always are in registry or junk files). I will do test with ram as you instructed ... Thank you so much :)

there is another free system optimizer called glary utility`s , I use it as well as advanced system care.

If you click on the 1 click maintenance , it will check your startup programs and delete any naughty ones, give it a go it will not do any damage , I have use these programs for many years.

For surfing have you tried a browser with less overhead like Opera(link)?

Many thanks for useful info; I defragged the hard and surprisingly I got 6GB of space.

Smart RAM also provided 50-100 MB more RAM

Now, the system performance is better; and this week I will install an additional 2GB RAM

Am I missing something or didn't the OP state his/her OS?

I assume its an XP based system - and as far as I am aware they degrade.
It may be easiest to buy an external drives and do a full recovery of the laptop, then instal all MS updates followed by any software...

And 512MB on XP is aually enough - I lieved with 512MB for a long time on XP.

google chrome is HORRIBLE for a system without a ton of memory. it uses significantly more memory than any other browser out there(with the exception of firefox - firefox uses WAY, WAY less memory to start out, but it leaks it as you open more tabs).

basically, your problem is that you're using EXTREMELY crappy hardware and high-end software. just because software is new doesn't mean its leaner(in fact, it usually means its more bloated). basically, you've been increasing the demands on your hardware over the years without improving the hardware itself

I have 3gb of memory and i still get low memory alerts with W7 and Vista, but not with smart memory installed, it seems to work really well, unlike most other memory optimizers.
