Looking for a gaming laptop at the moment, and want to know what I should look at for better performance than my desktop (that's where the 6850 came from).

You'll need a top-end graphics card to beat that, so 680M or 780M graphics from Nvidia or 7970M or 8970M graphics from AMD.

The desktop HD 6850 is basically a higher clocked mobile 6970M. The 6990M pulls level with it stock for stock and sometimes even beats it squarely as it is based on the HD 6870.

This being the case the 7970M or 680M will totally win out! The 780M is in a different league altogether being 30% above the other two cards.
