Currently the 500gb 5400rpm is available.
500gb 7200rpm is scheduled for dec/jan,
Are there any bigger size laptop hard drives coming out?

All I can think of are the 512GB SSDs that have been announced, something like end of 2009.
-
Something below 200 lol. not into ssd.

I've seen no announcements about anything bigger than 500GB but they must be technically feasible. Commercial / manufacturing / marketing factors must influence the timing. First they would like people to buy the current products, then upgrade next year. I'm still trying to fill my 500GB. The increased capacity over 320GB was a big step.
Reduced power consumption and re-thinking the hybrid HDD would be higher up my priorities. 500GB plus, say 16GB of SSD on board could give most of the SSD performance without the cost.
Purely a guess: Perhaps early 2009 and introduction mid 2009 for bigger HDDs.

i've heard some rumors of a 640gb disk in february / march. but those where just rumors.
but then again, my home environment is now
32gb ssd on the notebook
128gb (2x64) ssd on the desktop
2.5tb on the windows home server
together with 1gb lan, and 300mb wlan, i really have no need for storage on the devices itself.
i have a 100gb 1.8" disk around if i need to take something bigger with me.. hadn't had the use for it yet. -
500gb just came out and only ONE manufacturer has a potential release date for the 7200rpm version and we're talking about more than 500? i don think it'll happen until 3Q next year.

500gb 5400rpm is out for some while, not? is that thing new?
and anyways, why should we talk about what's out? we always want the next big thing, not? -
ya 500gb 5400 rpm has been a while, 500gb 5400rpm that is in a laptop form factor is a different story. obviously they're still perfecting the 250gb per platter and if they did what they did with 500gb before, ya maybe 640 will come out very soon with three separate discs, but it won't fit in most laptops
-
Maybe Samsung will release a 3 platter 750GB drive who knows. The technology is ready.

hm right, the first 500gb one was too thick.. hmm..
but, what about turning the bits upwards so they can stand instead of lying on the ground, consuming much less space..
wait, they've done that, years ago..*let's get perpendicular* - i don't get that tune out of my head
-
Why do you need more than 500Gb capacity in your laptop?
You should look into using an external harddrive to back your files up.
Having 500gb of data on a laptop is dangerous.
If that drive fails, you have 500gb of data loss.

you definitely need >500gb in a laptop.. i mean.. *sais the dude with 32gb laptop*
windows home server rules..2.5tb storage and autobackups there
-
The reason why i would like to have a massive drive is because i have so much media, pics, videos, and music on my Gateway P-6831FX. Im about to expand it to 2x 500gb 5400rpm Western Digital hard drives = 1TB in Raid 0. Whenever they drop below $99. I used to have an 250gb 3.5" external hard drive + power adapter, but it was horrible to carry around constantly.
-
Ive heard that there will be a 750GB one in the next 1-2 years...
-
-
Dunno if we are gonna see anything over 500 for a while... Aren't desktop drives stuck at 1.5TB?
-
Both Western Digital and Fujitsu are looking to have 750GB hard drives for mid-2009 and 1TB in 2010.
-
We had 3 platter 500GB drives and we now have 2 platter 500GB drives so I'm sure 3 platter 750GB drives aren't far off.
-
Putting them in RAID 1 will do the opposite. -

not to say that i never get, how people can have need for that much media on the go. as if i always have to be able to watch all my kim possible episodes everywhere, anytime. and all dvds at the same time. and listen to weeks/months of music while on the train for 15min.
i'm a dj, and have to take with me quite some sound to be prepared, still, i can live with a 32gb ssd very well. i have the 100gb hdd beside me, and only used it once so far. -
Maybe some people only have a notebook and they have a lot of media that they would like to carry. I have no problem filling up my 6TB array.
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
i have no problem filling up terabytes, too. but actual terabytes of useful data that i have need to access daily, no.
and you should never have "only a notebook". you should ALLWAYS have backup storage. and backupstorage should always be bigger than the actual storage. so you can shift off old data you never use but don't want to delete. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
and if your backup storage is on a windows home server, you have allways webaccess to it, great access from home, and automated backups of your system.
i can see the need for storage. but often a simple cleanup reveals several tens of gb of data you just don't need, or don't need at hand. i'm doing that about once a year and free up my disks massively thanks to it. -
It would be nice, but not everyone has that luxury.
-
There are many situations that call for >500gig. Just because your particular use of a notebook means you can settle with 32gig doesn't mean the same for everyone else. Personally I work abroad for 3 weeks out of 4, so am stuck with a laptop and during that 3 weeks I want access to as much of my files as possible. It's not much use having a huge storage array at home for me.

it should be first priority after "i have a laptop". and everyone finds an old pc somewhere around that isn't used anymore. drop in some disks that lay around, and get the demo of the homeserver.
if you're at home, finance the licence (and 1, 2 big disks) together with the family. if you're studying, having a dorm-room, organise yourself with the friends in the room, and neighbours. up to 10 systems can be stored on one.
it's not that expensive at all. and it gives you the savety and luxury of knowing all your data is save. finally i can go back to raid0 without any issues
i myself bought a cheap atom 330 (dual core atom) system on ebay, and two 640gb disks for a start are cheap, too. should be doable below 500$, split up to 10 friends that can use it, and you're at 50$ or so for full backup and storage. and everyone can give it's favourite old disks that lay around (we all have older hdd's) and just plug them in for storage expansion.
yes, it costs. no, it's not luxury. yes, it's worth every cent. -

do you watch all your movies? why not take the 10/20 movies with you you haven't watched yet or haven't watched for the longest time?
i know people are terribly lazy. i am, too. i just don't see the use for that much storage on the go. and i do that, while having a backup of my dads pc on the home server. it's about 1.2tb big. all music and tv stuff he records. crazy.. -
Well I have 4 virtual machines each of >50gig, and thats just for work. Then the system. There isn't much media on my current 500gig drive, I carry that on externals, but I'm down to 20gig free space! I work in Russia where the internet is horrendously expensive, so downloading from a home server is a no go. I can see your argument for storing things on a central server, but it wont work for everyone and plenty of people do need >500gig with them all the time. I actually have 2tb worth of drives with me, all portable, to make sure I'm backed up and can still do my work if anything goes wrong.
-

well, while 4x >50gb is around 200 to 300gb and there's still much left to the 500gb, i can see your position. people bringing with full server environments on vms and similar stuff, f.e. for support can't ever have enough storage
(then again, those are huge vms.. most of mine are between 5 and 20gb).
work can always force one to strange requirements. in your case, huge storage.
i actually thought about home environments.
but for such needs, a purchase for a notebook with two drive slots should be quite nice. at least 1tb currently possible, then.
but your situation should not be the default. still, your needs should be possible to get satisfied, too. -
wth
I'm fine with a combo of a 80GB SSD and a 320GB 7200rpm HDD in my laptop. Right now I've only used up 220GB. -
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
hehe, everyone his own stuff..
but some tv series can eat up 20 to 50gb. then again, you normally don't need the whole serie portable.
(you haven't actually quoted kim possible. that's strange..)
yes, sounds like a reasonable scale. it depends on the things one does.
games tend to eat up quite some storage. then again, i'm admin of a lan center where we have quite some games installed. currently the installation is @ around 160gb. while big, for a one-purpose installation (gaming), it's still not much.
a media center that records tv and movie need a big storage, but again, not the system itself, as it can stream all on the secured mirrored storage server. it needs a big temp for the actual recording (doesn't _need_ but i'd do it that way..).
advantage of not having that much local data: not needing a specific system. i can watch movies everywhere in the house. on the pc (24"). on the asus eee of my gf (she likes to watch her dvd's on it, streamed from the homeserver). on the plasma downstairs. on my notebook.
same for music. works even for the xperia sony ericsson. no need for a pc, then.
all my local stuff is the "stuff i work on". actual music productions. actual coding projects. newer photo collections. recorded / ripped movies, dvds. vmwares.
of course the 32gb on the notebook are too less for quite some of this. the 128gb on the pc on the other hand are more than enough for all of this. so going up 4, 5 times the storage (or 15x + on the notebook) is HUUGE.
but, while this is a topic about usefulness of storage 'requirements', i'd still love to get bigget 2.5" disks. espencially to use them instead of 3.5" ones in the home server.. but price/gb makes me always choose just another 3.5" -
i wish this didnt turn into a WHAT WILL U USE THE SPACE FOR?
all i wanted to know was never answered.
Just say yes or no. if yes, estimated date! -
Of course no one knows.
Wait for an official press release. -
I see several answers that says Q3 2009.
