what do i need to do to maintain the notebook's hardware? (e.g. cleaning vents)

and do i need to clean any internal component? if so, what is it? and how often should i do it, should i do it by myself or just send it for a service?

    Hello,

Here is what I do for cleaning my notebook, mostly every month.
I cleaned the heatsink (which is the vent) and the fan with compressed air. Then I clean rest of my notebook with a cloth to removed any dust/particles.

Well for some compressed air is great for cleaning out cracks/crevices and fan vents. Keeping your monitor clean is good also of course, you can buy some cleaning solutions at a store or just use a soft cloth.

Other than that make sure you keep the machine free of spyware and viruses, run a firewall also. Make sure to defrag and clean up your HD now and then. And be careful with it, don't spill drinks or drop it or man handle it any!

Try to maintain a dust-free environment for your notebook. Its also a good idea to buy an air duster and regular blow away all the dirt and grime that inevitably build up in corners, edges, I/O ports, etc. You could also buy a screen cleaning cloth and liquid for the notebook screen.

Compressed air is a great tool, I'll agree with otaku and Netbrakr. If you feel comfortable removing the bottom panel(s) on your notebook to get direct access to the fans, that would be the most efficent way of cleaning it out.

You also might want to invest in a microfiber cloth as jetstar said so you can wipe off the surfaces on your notebook with ease. They do a great job of removing fingerprints and dust, especially on the screen.

you might also use a duster to take away dust from the keyboard area.
