How long is the lifetime of a typical laptop monitor before you start noticing that the monitor has lost its brightness or its color richness?

if its LED, it doesnt loose brightness over time.

if its CCFL, i think it depends on the quality. Personally, Ive seen no difference in a year on my notebook screen. ive had a notebook for 2years before, and saw a very small difference.

Thats not true LED's lost brightness over time. I have seen this with many old laptops the little power light is very dim compared to the hard drive activity light right next to it

LEDs will lose brightness over time, just like fluorescent tubes. Typical half-life for a white LED backlight is in the 10-20k hour range, which, for an 8 hour/day laptop user, will be 4-8 years.

Technical obsolescence occurs much more quickly.

Just from experience - our very first laptop, a Asus (about 8 years ago) worked well for at least 4 years, then something else came apart (OS became unstable, reinstal & format didn't do anything) but the screen worked fine.
My old Medion (3 years and maybe 8 odd months) works fine, as do all other computers...

My current Asus laptop started having some less bright spots after 3 years.
