My laptop came with the Samsung 4GB ram (Product ID: M471B5273CH0-CH9) and I have the Patriot Signature 4GB ram (Product ID: PSD34G13332S) as a spare. If I combine these together for the 8GB ram, would they work with no problems? Would the difference in brand or possible latency difference affect anything? Thanks.

They will work with no problems at all. Any difference means nothing in the end.

Brand name and latency( both are CAS 9, if they were not both the same the chipset would use the slowest CAS for both) is not a problem, further running two 4GB Ram modules will give you a system performance boost, Dual Channel Symmetrical will be active, both modules have the same number of chips-8 per side, dual sided=16 total(each ram module has the same ram configuation)
    Your good to go.

    Cheers

Yup. I did the same thing on my old laptop but with 2 2GB sticks and there is no problem. Go right ahead.
