When you buy a new laptop, there is a soft paper like material kept between the laptop screen and keyboard. Should I continue to use it or no need. I read somewhere that keyboard keys can put permanent marks on screen, don,t know it,s true or not?

They can if it is a raised keyboard. I can't think of any laptops out now that have those issues.
I have heard that if you put pressure on the center of the screen you can do it with almost any laptop, depending on the build. The only other way I can think of is shutting the LCD too hard. Not really something I would worry about too much. -
As USAFdude mentioned, they help in cases where the screen tends to rub against the keyboard. Most laptops dont need it. I think a couple of Averatecs had this issue.
Keep it or throw it depending on whether the screen touches the keyboard or not. -
Yeah, my old Satellite 5005 had some marks on the screen where the keys touched the lcd a few times, it didn't ruin anything, but it sure made it distracting. That was due to flex in the lcd cover.

I just got a screen protector from http://www.shaggymac.com/ ($12.95) for my msi 1029. i travel with my 1029 a lot and I was starting to see keyboard marks on the lcd. It's the best $12.95 I have ever spent on a laptop part. I wish I had one of these when I had my thinkpad t41. It makes closing the lid a little bit harder but well worth it. I hate keyboard marks on my screen.
