My laptop is randomly shutting down for no reason, I'm having problems with a laptop that bought a few months ago the seller didnt told me about any of the problems that the laptop had, the charging port damaged, one of the sata ports was broken and most importantly the GPU (GTX 880m) did not work, I was able to repair all those problems one by one but now I am facing another problem that is very strange, the laptop is randomly shutting down for no reason, I tried using it with and without the GPU and It is still doing the same, I try using a Linux live USB and it also does the same the only way that the computer does not turn itself off is 1) being in the BIOS menu and 2) using Windows in safe mode, many will think that it is the temperature but everything is below 35 degrees at the time of shutting down, before repairing the GPU I was able tl use the laptop without any problem but now I cant even if removed it ( I have the battery and the charger, the laptop is a cyberpower fangbook )

tilleroftheearth Wisdom listens quietly...
Have you tried different RAM? Running an O/S w/full functionality is different than BIOS or Safe mode.
Does it shut off totally? Or, does it die with an image on the monitor? Does HWINFO or similar show temps low/normal for all components?
How did you fix the charging port? Were any of the ancillary circuits damaged (soldering iron use?) in the process?
Does a different charger do this too? Does it do the same on only battery power? Does it do the same on AC power but with the battery removed?
-
1) I tried using one dimm at a time and still, I tried a bunch of Linux distro and is still doing the same( I can install Windows without any problem the machine only start restarting after the installation is fine )
2) it shut down completely without any image on the screen, hwinfo shows amazing temp on all the components
3) the port was just loose and with a little bit of cleaning and new soldering, after that I was using the laptop without any problem
4) I only have one charger at the moment, yes and yes.tilleroftheearth likes this. -
What do you mean by "randomly shutting down"?
- Suddenly going completely dead, not a single light on, like the power is cut
Edit: sounds like this is it? ^^^
- BSOD - if so what is the detail on that (the 0x00000000 stop code and error type and maybe also a filename)
- Computer starts the normal shutdown process and off's itself as though you'd clicked Shutdown
Have you noticed it happening in any particular circumstance (under load or after a certain action or while a program is open).
Try disabling everything except the bare minimum in device manager for a while, network devices card readers etc - being stable in safe mode it might be misbehaving driver or hardware or both
Look at the System event logs in Event Viewer for hints on things that may have happened just before the off or things that are constantly happening with a device/driver
(long shot, hard off's being usually hardware related usually leave nothing but a kernel power event on next boot)
Also try reseating the ram sticks
Edit: nvm done that -
Yes is shutting down completely ( like a power cut ), the computer give me the option to start normally or in safe mode.
It happens even if I'm doing nothing, I'll try to disable some of the devices but I don't know if I'm going to have enough time. I'm going to check the system event now. -
I replace the mxm with another and is still shutting down it takes longer though, now I'm using a k3100m and is still doing the same, feels bad.

Does it look like a msi gt780 or gt70. This is a very common issue with these crappy motherboards as I had the same issue. A certain resistor causes this issue. I don’t remember as it was a LONG time ago, when I was about 16/17. The more load on the motherboard the more frequent the power cut.
The only way I was able to fix it was with another cheap motherboard I found online.
This resistor is known to go bad due to heavy loads. And a 880m pulls around 120w on its own so that could be the reason combined with the processor load.
Ask @Khenglish he knows more than me, I’m pretty sure he knows about this issue too. -
In general a sudden hard shutdown means a short, or sometimes loss of thermal sensor read ability. -
So the only way for me to fix this bad boy is by getting a new motherboard?( It looks exactly like the gt70) -

Yes most likely, if you tired another mxm and it does the same thing you need a new motherboard.

It hurts that I was able to fixed the gpu and just because the board was bad I continued reflowing the gpu now when I use the 880m it turns on and off in 1 second, with that gpu I was able to get my 350 back easily.

If I hadn’t known I would’ve guessed the gpu too. But mistakes happen, I dropped my alienware 18 which had a msi gtx 1070 mxm with an sli connector in it (cost me around £400/$550 and was the rare kind) and the die cracked. I was so frustrated but it happens...
