    Hi,

I am trying to use my new Samsung hdtv as a dual monitor with my dell d600 laptop. I have a vga cable setup between the two that allows the dual monitor part to work, but I also want to have the sound from my laptop come through my tv since it will be of a higher quality. I just bought a cable that connects from the headphone jack of my laptop to a red and white audio plug that goes in the tv. However, I haven't been able to get it to work. Theoretically, is this something that should be able to work. Is there any settings on my computer or tv that I might need to change. There are a few different ports on the back of my tv. I have tried each one, but I think it should go in the audio out under the pc (3 see below, these are from the tv manual)

Any help you can provide are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks, Tim

Hmmm...from the description you should be plugging both sound and video to number 1. It seems like you should just use a 3.5mm male to male cord and not use the RCA. You might be able to plug the red and white to number 7 AV IN, but then you would have to able to use the video from pc in and audio from av in which I doubt is possible with that tv.

    it will work.

the connector you bought is a 1/8" to RCA Stereo. you plug the RCA ends into the audio input on your tv/receiver/whatever. change the audio input on the tv/receiver/whatever to where the audio input is and it will work.

looks like "7" on the diagram

In my experience, most tv's will not let you mix and match video and audio inputs. Most tv's have an tv/video button which allows you to cycle through the various inputs, but not a separate button for the audio which he would need in this case. This is all assuming he wants both video and audio from the laptop playing from the tv at the same time.

Well...the the audio and video are on separate inputs to the TV. The Audio and Video are on different inputs. The Audio is on Composite, and the video is on VGA.

If you cannot cycle the audio and video inputs separately, you cannot use the TV speakers while using VGA.

And your reason for repeating exactly what I posted?

    Thanks for the replies.

There is no separate way to change the source input for audio or video, so that rules out some possibilities.

I have also just tried to get the audio as a stand-alone source without the vga, but the tv hasn't been picking it up. I tried all of the difference connections on the back of the tv.

I noticed that they do mention in the instruction manual that the audio port to the left of the vga port can be used to get audio at the same time. In the drawing though, it doesn't look like a standard headphone connection, but instead a typical audio connector on both sides. It says to connect it from the audio out jack on the sound card of the computer. Since I have a laptop, the only audio out I know of is my headphone jack. Any ideas if there is a cable to accomplish this and where I may be able to find it.

    Thanks, Tim

Yes...I'm not sure what you mean by a typical audio connector, but it looks like a 3.5mm jack- just like the headphone out on your laptop. You can purchase a 3.5mm male to male cable at radioshack. Your headphone jack is pretty much the same thing as audio out.
