I have an older Compaq R4000, which, unfortunately, suffered an accident during a move a couple of months ago. The LCD has been rendered completely-unusable, and I have since bought another (sturdier) laptop.
However, for a while I was using the broken R4000 by attaching a monitor to the VGA port. The rest of the system seems OK.
I have DL'ed the maintenance manual for the R4000, and the instructions about removing the LCD are straightforward. I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the system will still function with the LCD REMOVED, to use it as a (sort of) "other-room" computer, connected to a monitor.
Will it still boot? or will the system refuse to start at all without the LCD attached?
Any help would be great.
Cheers!!

Yes it will work. A laptop without the LCD is just like a mini desktop box.

This is how I'm using my laptop at the moment
My LCD broke and still waiting for a new one!

If you want, you could probably actually off the whole lid, provided that you relocate parts like the wifi antennae.

For the price of a 15.4" screen I think it is worth fixing though. You can get a flat screen in ebay for £30 to £40. -
ya it will work... but u might need to be a little careful of dust building up if any parts of ur motherboard become exposed when u remove LCD...
Laptop without LCD...
