    Hi,

I removed the cover of my Sony VAIO PCG-Z1RMP laptop. mainly to clean and also to see where to upgade the memory (Which I didnt do).

After putting the laptop back togetther, it booted and I successfully used the internet for about 3 minutes.

At this point the touch pad and keyboard stopped working and I have to turn it off at the switch.

Now when I turn it on, the power button, battery, wifi button etc. light and there is some noise coming from the machine. Possibly the HD. But nothing actucally appears on the screen.

    Please help!!!!

Is it possible that one of the ribbons i re-fitted got loosened after turning the laptop back on?

well re-seating is always a good start.

So you see nothing on the screen at all?
    can't even get into bios?

I will try re-seating tonight, I just wanted to see if it was a common problem.

I couldnt seem to get into the BIOS. I assume the way to do this is to hold down F1, or ESc at startup. I did both but nothing happened.

I certainly dont think it is actually doing much, it certainly isnt boot but without visual feedback. the HD isnt grinding away like it usually does but there is life.

Also I will try and plug it into a monitor.

No, don't try to power it up again and remove the battery from it. Open it up again and try to remember what and where you cleaned and check those components again. Also examine ALL ribbons for any damage (loose, shifted, pinched in between the plastic casing... I hope not that can't be good). Also pay attention at the screws when you take them off. Put all of them on a surface in a pattern matching the back of the cover. Some are short, some are longer, some are thicker or both. It'll be great if you can put the screw back in the same exact spot you took it out from and handtight don't overkill it. If you use a big screwdriver you may not notice the difference when you tighten it. Good luck and do it right this time!

Oh and don't forget the electrostatic discharge, very important!

Does putting the correct screws in the correct position really make a difference?

Yes, because they're usually small and you can't tell the difference unless you compare them next to each other and if they're different you already mixed the two up after comparision then you start to wonder which one was which.

BUt I mean in terms of actually getting the laptop working again.

Does putting wrong screws in wrong places actually effect things?

It shouldn't. The only issue that I could cause the laptop to be dead related to a screw is if there is a loose one rattling around inside and it shorted something out.

As in putting a longer screw where a shorter one used to fit? It could go thru another circuit board at worst. I don't know... did you ever install a laminate kitchen contertop or a dishwasher? The screw will make its way on the other side. Those rules cannot be ignored.
