Hey every1, I was just curious - does anyone know if them baggage scanning machines at airports have any adverse effects have on laptops? Any possibility of having magnetic media wiped clean? Circuitry fried? Or anything else...?

Nope, not at all. Very safe to pass it thru, otherwise my laptops would have been fried a few 10s of times :D

At least three trips a year, with multiple connections and rescans on each stop. I guess airports in different countries don't trust each others :p

At least they have done away with the swab test (not sure if that's what they call it) a while ago... although I must admit I did like the free dusting :D

over a million miles of flight in the past 10 years, 12+ diff countries, 50+ diff cities& town, 99% with a lappy...

    1) no adverse effects, unless they drop/bang and bump it...
    2) no problems on the flash drives too.
    3) no problems with high altitude or air pressure changes on a lappy...
    4) no problems with printers and the scanners.
    5) no problems with the swabby thing... the swab test is to check for gun powder residue... for fun, pop some firecracker near your bag and lappy... then go flyin...
    6) yes problems when you SHIP your lappy with the checked baggage... dont do this folks... no matter how tired you are... and how heavy your lappy is...

    hope it helps...

ps, not trying to be arrogant, just adding to the extend of my experience in this matter...

If you don't mind spending the night in the slammer hehehe

I do appreciate security that are calm and friendly enough to allow you to explain what might be in the bag rather than just get everything out first and ask you later. The french have always been nice, the germans not so much. In the US, depends on the weather :p

I remember once in prague, the security officer who was at the scanner monitor, all of a sudden called his superior as my lappy was passing thru. I was like what the ... so the guy tells me something looked suspicious to him and wanted to double check. I asked if I can have a peak, and he was right. It looked like a knife stashed in my lappy, but it was only the optical drive, I guess the eject mechanism :D Needless to say minutes later I was boarding the plane with my lappy.

    PS: deleted your extra post!

if you fly often, the best use for frequent flyer miles is to get upgrade on your trip home. so you can relax.

if you don't fly often, you use the frequent flyer miles to get free tickets for yourself and family...

i opt to upgrade since my trips, there is usually a kid behind me kicking the seat, or the plane is packed with blabbermouths...

geesh! some people can't stop talking...

    one funny thing tho...
since i got my new lappy, i've been dying to open this sucker and run it in the cabin at night... he he he... i think it will wake up a couple of folks with my 17" super duper bright screen...

    i am such a delinquent...
