Hi Guys,
I intend on picking up an ssd for my notebook. I thought about the 256 gb, but was told by a friend that a 512 will be much faster and that a 1tb will be much faster that a 512 and 256. Assuming We compare these three from the same company, is it true that a larger ssd is faster too ?
regards.

Not necessarily. Depends on the specific line/series of SSD we're talking about.

What do you intend to use it for primarily; say mostly storage and nearly full, or large size file deletions/writes nearly full, or lots of smaller random writes nearly full? If it will never exceed 70% full then go with the size closest to that figure you need.
SSD memory can't write over data the same way that an HDD does. There will be a penalty if the drive is too full and garbage collection can't keep up with deletions and new writes.
A simplistic analogy would be a single piece of paper representing 256GB and two pieces being 512GB. You fill the first page up with print in ink. Before you can write new words you have to erase some existing text including a whole line; remember you can't just write over it like an HDD can. If you don't have any spare space you might take a performance hit and increase the wearing - just like you would if you repeatedly erased and rewrote the same line over and over again on paper - eventually you would lose the ability to write to the paper as it becomes damaged.
Hope this helps. -
No, not necessarily. As Tiller said, it depends mainly on the brand (among other things). You won't notice the difference in performance between SSD's (based on capacity) during 'everyday' usage. Just grab whichever meets your needs. I recommend one of the Samsung 840 series SSD's, they're quite reliable.

For example, I spent 200 Euros on my first 128GB SSD. Two years later I bought a 256 GB model, twice as fast, for roughly the same price.Dennismungai likes this. -

Or better yet, look at the Samsung 840 EVO.

The 256GB is much better than the smaller capacities for this new line. I have seen it on sale for 159 ish.
Larger SSD = Faster SSD ?
