What is the largest capacity I can get for a ATA/IDE 7200rpm drive? I've looked and looked and have not been able to come a conclusion, so help is appreciated.

It hasn't quite arrived, but the Fujitsu MHZ2230BJ promises up to 320GB at 7200rpm. Samsung also announced a 250GB 7200rpm. But, if you are buying today then I think you have to live with 200GB which the 320GB 5400rpm HDDs will beat in most benchmarks excess access time. See Tom's Hardware.

    He mentioned ATA, not SATA.
As of now, the largest ATA 2.5" drive is the Hitachi 7k100 series at 100Gb, and the Momentus 7200.1 series at 100Gb.
However, these drives are becoming harder and harder to find.
But there is a solution. Western Digital released a 250gb 5400rpm drive which is actually substantially faster than either of the two 100gb 7200 drives.
I would get the 250gb 5400rpm drive, since its the fastest ata drive, and its also the largest, so you do not have to sacrifice anything.

I "think" kitsune means ATA-6 PATA and not SATA. The largest I have seen is 160gb, but there may be others.

I have 2 x WD Scorpio 250GB ATA 5400 rpm drives in my notebook and I'm very satisfied with its performance. Before I upgraded I had a stock Fujitsu 100GB 5400 rpm drive.

Err... I must learn to read more carefully. :notworthy: I am also assuming that the OP means 2.5".

I can't find anything bigger than 100GB at 7200rpm with ATA connector. Already noted is the alternative of the WD2500BEVE 250GB but this is probably beaten in performance by the Samsung HM160HC which uses 1 platter so it has the same performance as the 320GB 2 platter drives.
