My 5 year old Latitude D610's hard drive has become very noisy. I assume it is about to expire. Does an adapter exist so that I can I install a new Sata II hard drive in it? Thanks, Joe M

The D610 Takes a 2.5" Enhanced IDA (ATA-6) Hard drive. 5400 or 7200 RPMS will work. 20 - 140 GB will fit and work with out issues

Thanks a lot for the rapid response. I was told such an adapter existed but could not find one. I am glad I asked about this. I am new to this forum, is there a need for me to close this thread, or mark this as my best answer (which it is)?

You are better off buying a Samsung HM080GC or a Samsung HM160HC for your laptop. Those are the fastest drives offered for the PATA 2.5" interface.
Check newegg/ebay for prices. The Hm080GC is cheaper, as it is only 80gb, but you should have no problem finding the spacious 160gb HM160HC for no more than $60.
If you need more than 160gb of space, you can try out the WD3200BEVE, which offers similar performance with 320gb of space. However this drive is costly, and in my honest opinion, it isnt worth investing alot into an older machine, unless you really plan on keeping it a long time.

Only mods or admins can close a thread and that is not the normal procedure here.

    I bought a year ago a WD2500BEVE for €79,- for my D610.
I know it's an old notebook, it's my old rig from work what I kept, but still rockin'. When I compare to my other newer systems, I use it the most. It's not too big and easy to take everywhere. I maxed everything out of it. M780 2.26GHz, 2GB, 250GB, WIFI N mini pci and a 2nd 4R084 battery. I'm planning to keep this till it'll fall apart. ;)

^ I appreiate the recommendation, I recently got a G73JGH-a1 and I can't believe how high maintenance it has been.
It is like the Jaguar of the PC world.
I am glad I kept the D610 and like you I will run it till the MB fries or someone steals it when I leave it unattended in the library.

I am also going to vouch for the Samsung HM160HC; I have it in my aging Dell Inspiron 8600 (thanks to K-tron's excellent review), and it really was a breath of fresh air for a dying laptop. The performance is excellent, the heat and noise minimal.

If you look on eBay, you can find D-port to SATA drive adapters. Whether you can boot off them, I don't know. But you can get a SATA drive into the D610 if you are really determined to. But I agree with others, its probably time to start thinking about abandoning the platform.
