    Depends on the scenario.

If it's in a bag or somewhere where the vents are blocked and there is little to no ventilation then it can overheat. Besides that there are really no issues with leaving it on besides accumulating more dust on the innards, but that happens with every computer.

I wouldn't have my laptop on 24/7. A lot of people say it's not good for the computer but what do they know? But I've heard a lot of stories with laptops starting to burn because it was on for such a long time.
You should at least turn it off when you go to sleep. I can't really see the point of a laptop being on when you sleep. It only takes a minute to start it again.

I could see why you might want it on (I never turn mine off), but I can't see why you wouldn't be ok with sleep or hibernate. Anyway, most dangers from power failure have been mitigated by hardware and OS design improvements over the last 2 decades. The biggest risk actually isn't from when the power dies, it's from when the power comes back on and surges. The surge can fry circuits (though that is rare).

There are programs that'll shutdown your laptop if your CPU idles for X minutes, no activity. If you want it to shutdown X minutes after finishing a task.

I leave my laptop on at night when I'm downloading with the battery in, though when I'm not doing anything overnight I just shut down. So far (over a year), no adverse effects. My battery still has max charge and low heat production. My power here is unstable hence why I leave my battery in at all times as an UPS. It's at 100%, so I can always unplug and use it on the go.

It's not going to be a problem as long as your laptop aint overheating. Of course there is no point leaving your laptop on if u are not using it.

    That's basically it.
Unless you have an overheating problem due to dust or blocked vents, there is no reason why you have to shut down.
But if you have an overheating problem you should sort that out anyway.

Windows itself can send your laptop into sleep mode - I thought it could do shutdown too, doesn't look like it though...

    There actually is a point.
Leaving it to idle so Vista (and possibly Win7 too) can start to optimize themselves.
Or running a virus scan, or lending some calculating power to one of those projects that run via the internet (I don't).
