I just ordered a Lenovo Y540 17.3inch laptop, but it only comes with 8gb ram in single channel. If I find the model and buy the exact same model would I be able to run it in dual channel? Would be a lot more affordable for me to buy 8gb instead of a whole new 16gb kit then have to sell the old 8gb stick for less second hand.

What kind of cooling upgrades can I do apart from repaste? Is this laptop any hard to repaste? I've repasted desktops before but never any laptops. I've heard of thermal pad upgrades but where would I put them?

Yes, you can upgrade the ram with same speed ratings.

Pads to be put on chips surrounding the cpu and GPU.

There are some YouTube videos on it.

Follow the screw pattern for doing thermal paste

Any idea what size pads to get or which videos cover the topic well?

Grab a 100x100mm sheet of 0.5mm and another of 1mm thermal pad and you are set for any thickness that you might need.
