Hi, I just bought a lenovo Z710 laptop with a power plug that looks like a bigger rectangular usb plug with one pin in the middle. Does anyone know what type of plug this is? The length of the cord from this to the power brick is too short and I'd like to get a male/female extension. Thanks. 20140311_211327.jpg

That's Lenovo's new styled plugs, I doubt you are going to find extensions as they just changed it from the old IdeaPad/Essential connectors.

I noticed that plug too. What the heck Lenovo!?

There's already plug adapters out there though on amazon and ebay to convert from a standard round plug:

    Amazon.com: lenovo square connector adapter
lenovo square connector adapter | eBay

I really wonder why they made this decision. I think Lenovo do this though because adapters are 20V not traditional 11 to 12V. If you buy an alternate power supply with an adapter be sure it matches the voltage though. Still why though, Lenovo?

The older Lenovo plugs were quite fat, there was a limit on how thin you could make the laptop if your plug head is ginormous. That being said, they have kept the same plug design for 7 years now..

I thought they ditched the fat round plug for a smaller round plug a while ago. And yes, I have seen these new ones that look more like USB/firewire than a power plug.

HTWingnut, laptop power supplies are normally 19 volts.

IIRC _30 generation ThinkPads still used the fat tip. I think all the new _40 generation Think products use the new plug head. Yet another reason why I won't touch a new ThinkPad..

You're right. For some reason I had 12V on the mind, as I was looking at my Sony plug that's only 10.5V, but yeah most are 19-20V. But first I've seen that Lenovo plug.
