Can I buy after market upgrades for these from a 3rd party? Specifically a 500gb SSD and 32gb ram which cost almost as much as the stock W 550s on their own.

Not sure about the 32GB of RAM (in case some of their RAM is soldered or the system has a 16GB limitation; I really don't know) but the HDD definitely.

Any goto websites or advice for buying notebook components from a 3rd party?

If you're considering RAM and a SSD, amazon or newegg is fine. Any normal website. Just make sure the RAM is laptop RAM, and SSDs are generally all 2.5" and will fit in most any laptop (with a slot for it, of course. Unlike the Razer Blade with only a single mSATA slot).

The W550s has two RAM slots so 32GB RAM means two 16GB modules. These modules do exist, but are only slightly more easy to find than hens' teeth, and are priced accordingly.
