I'm thinking of buying a Lenovo X230. The SSD you can get from Lenovo in a custom configuration is pretty expensive. I figure I'll order one of Newegg and replace the HDD with it. If I make an exact clone of the factory-clean HDD onto the SSD and replace it, will this give me any problems?

I also wonder if the palmrest problems of the X220 are fixed in the X230. It's all over different forums that this is a problem in the X220:

    Thanks!

Cloning from HDD to SSD is not a great idea in my experience.

You can create recovery media from your existing hard drive and install the OS on the SSD from there, or do a fresh install from a "regular" DVD and skip Lenovo's bloatware.

I haven't owned a X230 but had no issues with the build quality of my (long since sold) X220 machines in several different flavours. Obviously, YMMV.

Can you tell me why it's not a good idea to clone a HDD into a SSD?

I kinda like to have the boot-recovery option on a laptop. It makes it less of a hassle to do a factory restore because I don't always have a Windows dvd on hand.
