I'm starting a new thread because it's a new issue.

Apparently other people have had this issue. When using the laptop for gaming (haven't done any tests with normal use yet), it will freeze the game randomly and then I hear a really loud pop sound coming out of the right side of the laptop. The computer shuts down right after. No BSOD. It's not because of my temps (78 max on CPU, GPU around 68). Any solutions? I haven't come across any that work yet. I hear it may be the HDD, but people who have an SSD have reported the same issues. It's funny because I was able to play Dishonored for a solid hour without any problems, but I tried playing CSGO a bit later and it crashed after a few minutes. Same thing happened when I tried to play a match of Verdun. Should I just RMA it and pray that the next one I get isn't trash like this one? If I do return it, will I be able to transfer my SquareTrade warranty to the new one? (Okay to be fair that question probably shouldn't be put here, but any experience is great haha :)

The last two times I heard a loud popping sound from a pc, was because of a capacitor exploding :p

Looks like an EVGA card. I'm sure they fixed you up nice and proper with a replacement card just like that, amirite? :p

As for the popping sound , it comes from the speaker ( the one on the right ), don't worry. I'm not really sure though what causes the random shutdown, might be the GPU memory overheating.

You could go and check if there is a critical error in the event viewer before the shutdown, aside from the Windows was not shut down properly issues. It might give you hints if the problem is on the software side.

Have you also monitored the clock speeds on the CPU and GPU as well as temps? If you see sudden drops due to throttling or something similar, it might also be an indication that the computer is indeed overheating.

If you can't pinpoint the source of the issue, you might as well return it to avoid any future issues.

I do not even remember, that was a long time ago, around 2006/2007, I think it was a Sapphire card, but I cannot remember the exact model. The capacitor looked just like in the pic I posted (I took it from Google).

Interestingly, I remember hearing the first loud popping sound some days prior to hearing a second loud popping sound, at which point the card was deemed utterly useless.
I had the card for 3-4 years so I just bought another one.

What else can cause a loud popping sound as the one the OP is concerned about?

Update: I couldn't find out what was causing the issue so I just decided to RMA it. I hope my second one is better. I'll post another update in a week.

Hey, my computer started having this problem after I updated to Windows 10. It has something to do with hibernation/waking up etc, cause after the popping noise happens once and it shuts down, it won't do it again until next time I'm starting the computer.

Have you had any problems again? What did they end up doing, as I'm thinking about RMA'ing it sometimes next week
