Hi, I'm maxing out memory using excel on this laptop even with 16Gb. Processor can handle more but Lenovo recommends only 16Gb. Has anyone tried upgrading to 32Gb ram

If you have only two slots for the SoDimms, then 16GB seems to be the ceiling.
Any 16GB x2 SoDimm configuration you try will be at your risk. -

You might ask in our Lenovo IdeaPad forum, but I wasn't aware any Intel "Haswell" based computer could accept 16GB So-DIMMs.

If you have HDD, then change to fast SSD, if possible and max virtual memory, it should be less painful. I would also suggest changing spreadsheet vendor, since a lot of MS software is very resource hungry, but that most likely is not a viable option. I stopped using excel many years ago, I use LibreOffice instead, does everything I need .

Out of curiosity, what are you doing in Excel?

Pivot table on 1M records does that ... and there's a few inefficient formulas (eg, vlookup). SSD is indeed the best option, or switch to desktop for those runs. Also, make sure to check ' Formulas > Calculation Options > Manual' and hit F9 when you want to recalculate (if you haven't set this already).
