Hi, I know some of you will say this is a old questionand that there is not a real perfect SSD and that each one prefer the brand they trust more, but because I never install any of them and that I am new with this M11x-R3 I ask for any advance with this
...
What I have a M11X-R3 with I7 2617, 8 GB Ram and WD 750 Gb 7200 RPM HD.
The Big question is what SSD is better I why?
What I'm looking installing a SSD, more performance, speed ,reliability and off course more Battery life too.
What Brand is more reliable and why? from this:
-Ocz
-Corsair
-Mushkin Enhanced
-Crucial
-Intel
What SSD I'm looking:
-OCZ Vertex 3 240 GB or OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS 240 GB. wish is better and why?
-Corsair Force 3 240 GB
-Intel 510 250 GB
-Mushkin Enhanced Chronos 240 GB or Mushkin Enhanced Chronos deluxe 240 GB. Again wish one and why?
-Crucial M4 240 GB.
What SSD have you installed and in what system? how long have you with it? How is it working? What problems?
I know the 240 Gb is more expensive but I need that capacity and I cant go with an external HD all the time...

There's little reason any more to choose a particular SSD for performance reasons. You'd be hard pressed to feel a difference. May as well just choose for reliability, and be done with it. So, probably Intel. Avoid the SandForce chips.
-
Off Course I forget that... thanks Thetoast that is a big reason too so I will ad it to the first post thanks... One more thing the intel is the more reliable about what I understand but are a little slower and expensive so are they that big difference to pay for it even if they have less performance? I also see they are the best in battery usage is this really?
-
I don't know about the full-size SSDs, but my battery life hasn't noticeably suffered after adding the mSATA SSD. There's a thread around here somewhere in which someone posted some return rates per manufacturer. Intel fared by far the best, and I think Crucial had done alright as well. OCZ and the like were way behind.
-
By the way, how many threads must you create on this one topic? There are now two in this subforum, and one in the Alienware section.
-
Yes first I make it in accessories subforum then I think it was best here to all looking for SSD will come here so I make this, but later the moderator move that thread to this subforum too and I don't know how to close that one... and the one in Alienware subforum was more for the general alienware owners that maybe don't look here and because this is a alienware then maybe someone there will give they experience with ssd in the M11x exactly... So they must be only two this and the one in Alienware section

Why isn't Samsung in your poll? Samsung may not make the fastest SDD's but they do make reliable SSD's.
-
I dont know but those was the more fasters I see for sale and to be honest I dont see any =>240Gb Sata 3 SSD for sale... Please give me a link to look at it...

remove all those SF based one and you have only 2 left, added in samsung you have 3. Anyone among these 3 are good.
SF can be good if your computer likes it but quite a number of computers(from all major brands AFAICT) have some models that don't. That is my rationale of removing SF, no point of gambling on something that doesn't have demonstrable advantage. -
As before, you'll have a hard time seeing the difference between any of those drives. I chose the M4, paid $350 new for the 256gb version. The M4 is based off the C300 which has outstanding reliability.

Hey any now the new mushkin Chronos Deluxe????
-
OP,
Here check out this website. Lot's of good info on the best SSD for the money with thorough testing to back it up. -
I skip the rest once I see this. -

I have not found to much info about OWC Mercury Pro but talking about the OCZ the best I understand will be the OCZ Vertex 3 MaxIOPS is this right? If so and with the information here . The Mushkin Enhanced Chronos Deluxe and the OCZ are must the same Drive with different brand and firmware, or that is what I understand with they tech spec I found:

And if that Review at hardwareSecrets both use the SandFroce SF2281 controler and the Toshiba TH58TAG7D2FBAS9 (16 x 16 GB) memory, so they looks to be very similar hardware...
What you think? -
If it is Sandforce, I can't recommend it. I've had issues with my Gen 1 Sandforce drive which were far more reliable than the gen 2 22xx controllers seem to be. I also know of several people with massive issues with their Sandforce Gen 2.
Intel, Crucial, Samsung. Can't go wrong there. No, Samsung does not have SATA 3 drives atm. Crucial M4 and Intel 510 are using the same controller and same brand NAND (allbeit different manufacturing sizes). M4 is better in real usage for most things, and it is usually a lot cheaper. That's what I normally recommend.
Crucial=Micron. Keep that in mind. -

At the end I order a Crucial M4 256GB from NewEGG reduced price yesterday so the CCA that is with Transfer kit (usb/Sata Cable and backup Software) was at 429,99 so with rush service and next day, and using newcostumer promo-code it was at 437,98, so good deal...
and at end this is why I select it...
1.-Much people say that stay out off the SandForce for reliability.
2.- More size it is 256GB so more than the 240GB of others.
3.- It is still a Sata III
4.- It save more battery the Mushkin/OCZ/etc use 3W ore some in active what is more that what my actual WD 7500Gb WD use 1.8W (that say WD), But the Crucial say 0.16W in active so is less than my actual HD not more...
5.- The Speed is still much more faster than my actual WD HD and take in note this HD is SataII and the Crucial is Sata III
6.- it is synchronous too.
7.- Some tech-reviewer say it has a very good if not better than some other access time in less than 0.1ms....
So I hope I make I good and reliable choice, but I hope it be a very good performance upgrade too from my WD 7.500Gb 7200RPM HD. So now to wait for it, and be ready to make the swap and all the new install, I will make the reinstal usin Windows 7 Ultimate 64, so other upgrade from my actual Win 7 home premium. Then I will try some bench to see the performance, thanks for all that try to help... -
But yes, Crucial and Intel both use Marvell controllers in their latest SSDs.
And jenryhl, you made a great choice. The M4 is a terrific drive, and to be honest, in real world use, is nearly as fast as the Vertex 3. You can't notice the difference without a stopwatch. Except the M4 will keep working. Just make sure to flash that firmware to 0002 if it doesn't have it already (it probably will at this point, it'll say on the drive label).
Let make a clear reference update answer to the old Question... Best SSD?
