Which one is best for 14" screen?
    1280x800 or 1440x900?

I have a 15.4" screen and I love the 1680x1050 screen. I am however concerned about 1440x900 on a 14" screen, would it make things smaller compared to a 15" with 1680x1050? If its larger I'm happy, but 1920x1200 on 15" is pushing it.

    1680x1050 on a 15.4" is ~129 DPI.
    1440x900 on a 14" is ~121 DPI.

    They're about the same.

I think 1440x900 for 14.1" is perfect. I have it on my D620 and my mom's E6400 has WXGA+ too.

15.4" I think ideal is 1680x1050, 1200p is kinda pushing it.

You will have a hard time finding 16:10 screens today (so no 1280x800, 1440x900 or 1680x1050) Apart from very few notebooks you can have either HD (1366x768) or FHD (1080p).

However 1366x768 on 14" is essentially the same as 1440x900 on 15" from the DPI, its not bad...

Most of them are also 16:9, unfortunately.

Screens are usually 1366x768, 1600x900, or 1920x1080 (1080p or Full HD)

And 16:10 are definitely hard to find. You really limit yourself if you stick with only 16:10, as much as I prefer it, its inevitable that for 95% of laptops you'll be stuck with 16:9.

    I'd rather have 1600x900 on a 14" or 14.5".

No loss of vertical pixels, but a gain of 160 horizontal pixels. 126 DPI on a 14.5" with the same screen area as 16:10 14", or 130 DPI on a 14" screen with a smaller area than 16:10 14".

I have WXGA+ on my T410s and the T400,T61 before that. My T60, 43, 42, 40 all had SXGA+ because i just couldn't stand the lower crappy XGA and WXGA. To my eyes anything over that is pushing it!(even though i kinda wish i could get 1050 vertipixels on the T410s)

I used 1280 x 800 and while it's ok, definitely missed the veritical resolution for my fave sites.

Yeah but how many business oriented notebooks offer 1600x900 these days? I think you are getting lucky getting 1440x900 for 14.1"

They were saying the new generation E6420 goes 16:9 :(

    Well put. :)

1440x900 for 14.1" is great. This can still be found on Lenovo ThinkPad T410, Dell Latitude E6410 and E5410, and other "business/professional" laptops.

1920x1080 (FHD) for 15.6" is pushing it, too. I find 1600x900 (HD+) for 15.6" more practical - this can still be found on Dell Precision M4500 and Lenovo ThinkPad T510.

1920x1200 for 17", like on Dell Precision M6500 and HP EliteBook 8740w, is excellent.

Sigh, I miss 16:10 aspect ratio already!

These days are over. You point it out yourself the new generation of business class notebooks will be 16:9 too.

So look forward to the pixel gains with 1600x900 on your 14" notebooks. ;)

Yeah but it's a dying breed. 1080p isn't bad on 15.6". I played around with the XPS 15 with the FHD screen, and it was good. I think 1200p is pushing it on 15.4". I saw a Vostro 1500 with WUXGA screen and my eyes were hurting after that. I've also seen an M6500, screen is delicious but outta my price range lol.

Yeah, which makes me not want to buy the new models...though looking for a 14.1" replacement for my D620, maybe an E6400 or E6410

Phinagle, I was just quoted what articles that state the E6420 went from 14.1" to 14" which implies 16:9. But that is all speculation, I hope they are dead wrong.

I think 768p on my 13.3 is a little too low to begin with, so I shudder to think about how it'd loook on 14". Any notebook screen below 125 dpi is garbage.

I am so pissed at all these blind people and their 15.6 screens with 768p resolutions. 1080p is a perfect resolution for a 15.6 laptop. 13.3 should have 900p and 14 should have something in between like 950p or whatever.

You may have gotten it already (I have one too) and viewing angles and colors (esp. at a vertical angle) are craptastic :( .. May not have been as bad, but coming off T60p (15" 1600x1200) it was a huge shock. It's been 3 months and I still have not fully adjusted :(

you should have returned it instead... if you didn't like it , you had the choice to get something else.
