Are Li-Ion batterys Lithium-Ion batterys? Can Li-ion batterys be joined together to make a large laptop battery?
I see there is a controller board in a laptop battery....
So does it matter that I do not want to use any other features than having power to power the laptop?
...and if a home made battery is rechargeable...wow...I will make up my own laptop battery.

not sure what you're really asking.
yes, li-ion is short for lithium-ion.
as you said, there is a controller chip onboard that prevent you to do dangerous things like thisthe controller chip is essential, it control voltage, recharging, power meter, and lots of other things that makes the technology works.
the li-ion battery is compromised of many cell. they usually state eg. 3-cell, 6-cell, 9 cell.
the cell itself if a cylindrical shaped unit, like your 'normal' battery. this is usually packed in a box to prevent you from accessing it. eg. 6-cell has 6 cylindrical battery packed into it.
lithium battery can and do explode.
another technology is lithium-polymer. -
I have 2 laptop batteries of the proper model for a laptop but both seem to be dieing.
One battery has displayed all 5 test LEDs on the side of the battery which indicates a 100% charge and possibly 100% good health but the laptop works for a very short time on battery power.
On the last attempt to run the laptop with that battery the laptop did not want to power on after the battery lost the little bit of power it had.
I reset the laptop by the reset button and inserted another battery and the laptop booted ok.
Now it has not powered on again.
So now I will wait for perhaps any power to leave the laptop and try again.
I am sure the laptop is ok. -

To make a long story short: yes, you can rebuild a laptop battery from individual cells. No, it is not a terribly effective idea; you are better off build a genuine new battery.
