I have Lifebook P3110 it has 3 usb ports. Whenever I attach an external DVD Drive via usb port it shutdown instantly (total power off) on all 3 usb ports. The external DVD drive has 2 usb cables one is for usb connection and the other is draw extra power from usb. If I attach the usb power cable and then attach the usb connection cable then the Dvd Drive works fine and it does not cause any sudden system shutdown. My question is it acceptable that just by attaching an external device to usb port the system crashes (Shutdown instantly)?
If I try to boot from the same DVD Drive the system shutdown instantly even if I have attached both usb wires (connection and power).
I have tested with Microsoft USB View and it shows that USB ports have no Over Current Protection in them.

Thank you for the reply. I have already done BIOS upgrade to the latest update available. I have already installed Windows 7. But the original thread is about USB Power Problem. My question: Is it acceptable that the whole system shutdown instantly just by attaching a power hungry usb device? Can I claim warranty based upon this thing?

As i wrote before-if you've done things like a clean install to elminate possible corruption and reflashed your BIOS and this persists then it sounding like a hardware issue to me. Have you tried to power this also using another power source like a DC IN? Your laptop has a ULV core 2 duo processor and GS45 graphics which are quite adequate specs.
Is what you're trying to power require more than 500mA of power? if so i would expect it not to actually power on.

The device is not asking for more than 500mA. I have tried the device using USB Y cable and it causes same isntant shutdown. Yes the device did came with 2 usb cables one for usb connection and one to draw extra power from another usb port, but if I attach both the usb wires that also causes instant shutdown. If I attach the usb wire which is there to draw extra power to a USB wall socket adapter then device works properly and no instant shutdown happens. But this requires me to buy another usb wall socket adapter and also forces me to attach my device to wall socket which kills the purpose of using the laptop in first place. My assumption is that even the faulty USB device should not cause Host/Systme sudden shutdown this means there is fault in host, Am I rite or wrong?

I've read your thread again and i'm going to move it to the hardware forum because you most likely will get more responses.
