Theres something I would like to know, what are the lifespans of the hardware components in notebooks? Because I was reading about Solid Slate Hard Drives and it said its life span was 140 years which is excellent, but what got me thinking was, when your laptop goes bang, the average user will get a new one. So if the average processor has a lifespan of 5 years (I don't know weather this is their lifespan, Im trying to find out) Which is the average lifespan of a conventional hard drive, whats the point of solid slate?
Also what other advantages of solid slate drives?

Less power consumption, weight, speed

The average life span of a normal hard drive is a couple of years at the most when taken care of. That means they are definitely the weakest link by far in a computer compared to the speed and lifespan of the rest of the components.
The point of SSDs is more speed, less heat, more battery life and longer lifespan. -
All the HDDs I have ever owned have done over 5 years+ being used everyday. Never had one fail on me. 2 Years is a very short life span...
-
Yeah if you take care of them and don't physically move them alot they should last a while.
But in laptops that move around alot, or are dropped, there is a much higher chance of failure when there's moving parts inside the drive. -
Ah right, I'm glad you've said that, because I was hoping that a laptop should last me more than a couple of years, and it looks like the advantages of SSD are well worth that bit extra. Also do you know when they are planning to introduce 80 Gb + SSD? Either that or a reduction in price as they are rather expensive.
-
Probably a couple of years at the very least, say by the end of 2009, when decent sized SSDs will be mainstream and reasonably priced.
-
Newegg sells a 128 Gb sata ssd for about 4300 dollars. With all new technology it'll come down in price. You just need to be patient.
-
The 128Gb is a 3.5" and will not fit in most laptops that have 2.5" bays.
I am on a waiting list with 3 companies, all of which i will be the first to get to test that drive if and when they get it out. The present problem is size. they cannot get anough NAND flash to fit inside the 2.5" form factor.
As for price, Im sure it will come down but its also driven by those who will buy it now and also the fact that SSDs ae very hard to obtain presently.
I dont understand why Samsung or Sandisk or Mtron dont have them more available to the consumer at reasonable prices. I also dont blame them completely, but rather, the resellers who have the gall to put almost a 200% markup on the product. -
HDD's last more than a couple of years! SSD's are considered to not last long enough, although I think 140 years is just fine. HDD's do fail but so does everything else.
-
I can't imagine that SSDs will be a significant factor in the consumer market for quite a while. The price per GB needs to come way down. They will be very useful in niche markets where the machines take more than normal abuse. I can see the military being very interested.
And of course all you hard core technophiles.
