Hi after seeing so many people's laptop in the forum/review/internet has a light leakage, i want to know if the light leakage is normal. Why is there a light leakage?

    please clarify this issue.
edit: specifically i'm refering to the XPS m1710 which i heard has a light leakage problem.

    thanks a lot

yes, light leakage is a very common problem. On a laptop screen with no light leakage, the whole screen is evenly illuminated.

On cheaper laptops, the screen may not be as good as ones on more expensive laptops, and the screen may not be evenly illuminated, leading to light leakage.

hmm... i'm planning to buy high end stuff (xps m1710, qosmio g30, alienware) what kind of screen should i expect? been hearing a lot of problem with the m1710. been readin a forum; and it says that the light leakage is not cause by the brand of the lcd panel rather than the backlight system. dell uses a system where the backlight can easily be installed, it turn out that the a certain sony vaio uses samsung the same panel as the xps m1710 but doesn't produce light leakage (or so i'm told)

can anyone shed more light in the "light leakage is common" issue? if so, what brand should i be aware of?

hmm...wobble, I think you're getting too worried about light leakage. I dosen't really make a world of difference. The difference of quality between certain brands of screens is rather minimal and light leakage is not really recognisable unless you look vert carefully on a plain black/white screen.
