Hey everyone,
So I spilled beer on my laptop yesterday (I know I know, I wasn't drunk, it was a simple accident, coulda been water). I just bought it 3 months ago and it is the MSI ge72 2qf apache pro. Nice machine, been good to me so far.
It got on the middle portion of my keyboard. I dried with hair dryer and towel asap. The 2 buttons that didn't seem to work initially were the "Q" and "8" on my keyboard. Now today it seems they are working.
My question is: Could it have been possible I didn't do any damage? How would I go about checking computer hardware diagnostics to make sure everything running properly? (Sorry, am somewhat of a computer newbie. The computer doesnt seem slower overall though)
I do have a 1 year accidental warranty coverage from MSI but I don't want to send it in if nothing is wrong. Just want to be able to self diagnose any possible problems that could have occured.
Much thanks in advance!!

The only way to know is to open it up and check. MSI may just replace the keyboard. If you have accidental warranty I would at least check to get that replaced. But I'd still open it up and check for evidence of liquid on the mainboard and clean it with rubbing alcohol. Otherwise, if it works, just leave it alone. Beer is not much worse than a water spill. Wine is bad. Been there.

Have you turn it on?

If you can see any traces of beer then you should dismantle and thoroughly wash the keyboard (and any other parts with traces of dried beer), then dry thoroughly.
The worst drinks for spill damage are the acidic, sugary soft drinks.

@John1960 I once spilled cognac on a notebook keyboard, with similar results - some buttons stopped working at first, but in couple of weeks everything got back to normal. It did work for another year or so before one of the keys started jamming sometimes. Replacement keyboard for your machine is quite expensive, on the other hand, and you already paid for accidental warranty.

If OP sends it for warranty as some seem to suggest, I would think they should test it, see everything works and send it back. Just waste of time and possibly shipping charges (not sure how that works). Probably better to get repair manual or find youtube video, open yourself and clean it up. Otherwise will attract dust and keys may start sticking, which then would better qualify for warranty repair.
But then I'm not sure if opening the laptop doesn't void warranty (some have stickers and painted screws), so self cleaning may not be the option after all.Starlight5 likes this.
