We're just now getting a slew of very high res laptops with the release of Windows 8.1 which is continuing to improve on high PPI screens. Unfortunately, I haven't found a good list of high res laptops searching the Internet so I thought I'd compile a list and see if anyone else has any more to add. I'll try to update the OP as more info comes in.

Of course there's a lot of other factors to consider such as display type (PLS, IPS, TFT) and GPU to drive these displays to pick a laptop, but this is a start. Anything missing? Anything excite people? We're sure getting close to a 4k laptop.

edit: Will be adding more to OP as people post more laptops.

I would like to include the panel type (e.g. IGZO for the XPS15) and the GPU for easy comparison.
    Great work!

+ Asus Zenbook Infinity UX301LA (13.3 inch 16:9, 2560x1440 pixel IPS) with Intel Iris Graphics 5100.

Zenbook added t the list. It looks like a great laptop. As for display type, that's sometimes hard to find. I added what I found, but some such as Apple don't really say what it is.

I suggest you do add the GPU for the benefit of others - many people will care.
It is very easy to find the screen panel type, you just need to know where to look, e.g.: Review Apple MacBook Pro 13 Retina 2.5 GHz Late 2012 - NotebookCheck.net Reviews

Apple MacBook Pro Retina 13 inch 2012-10 ---> Display 13.3 inch 16:10, 2560x1600 pixel, Apple APPA014, IPS LED, 13.3-inch, Retina display, 227 DPI, glossy: yes

They need a proper term for these high resolutions since they're all over the place (seemingly random resolutions). Maybe you can organize them by resolutions(1800p, 1440p, 1700p? (only the Pixel)) and/or PPI. Apple already named theirs Retina Displays. Thanks for making a list.

You should add the Precision M3800 and the Precision M4800, they both have the option of a 3200x1800 IGZO display like the XPS.

If you have the time, you could make an Excel spreadsheet for improved readability.

Nit: the M3800 is already listed (combined in first line with XPS 15). I agree the M4800 is not listed yet.

The subject line says greater than 1080p screens. As far as I can tell, HP ZBooks feature screens that are at most 1080p. (Do you have info about changes coming?) The now several-years-old 8740w may have been the last to qualify with WUXGA 1920× 1200 pixel screens.

Speaking of WUXGA screens, the Panasonic 52 toughbook also features one. (The model number stays the same though the processor is updated over the years.)

[Some people use "very high res" to mean at least quad HD, so at least 1440px (video HD is 720px tall). This may allow the O.S. to use pixel doubling for less-blurry scaling.]

Added the laptops mentioned and broke out the XPS 15 and M3800 separately since they have different GPU's. I couldn't find zbook 14 with a higher res display. 1920 x 1080 is the highest I found. Anyone have a link?

Also, the list is ordered by screen size.

    I found conflicting information.

The Sept 10 press release said
But the current specifications only list three FHD displays:
A guess is that the ZBooks do not yet offer HiDPI screens but HP plans to offer them in the future. One possibility is that HP will update the specifications whenever the screens become available to HP in sufficient quantity (or to their contract manufacturer). The video below mentions the dual cores coming at a later date, so a second possibility is that they could be released on that date. A third possibility is that there may be an updated version in January or February with Thunderbolt 2, so the screen options might be updated at the that time. (Possible dates two and three come from listening to a video tour for SlashGear by "Jimmy Holbert, Global Mobile Workstation Category Manager for Hewlett Packard", which does not mention a HiDPI screen.)

Thanks for making this list! Will be watching it closely over the coming weeks. I'm REALLY hoping Samsung releases a 15" laptop with similar or better specs than the XPS 15. I am 100% confident it's going to come out (they have a 13" with a QHD+, not unreasonable to expect a 15" soon after). Unfortunately, time is not on my side, once I have the funds, I HAVE to buy a computer (I'm without my own machine right now). So Samsung, if you're listening, you have 1 month to announce a new laptop. Please and thank you.

Well to be honest high resolution is a generic term which basically means anything beyond 720p.

To be clarify even further, we're in a period of transition for displays right now, so there is no generally agreed upon terms below UHD (2160p) which so far, none of them have achieved. Apple simply invented its own label.

Incidentally, I should also point out t hat pixel count is only half the battle since it gives you no indication as to the quality of that display.

Not yet, I was hoping to see such a panel in the Precision M6800, but so far no lcd panel manufacturer made one and that is the main issue.

Maybe when 17" laptops become popular in the future. Too many people like small laptops so the demand for bigger screens isn't as high.

The trend is towards thin and light so the days of 17+ laptops are going the way of the Dodo. Suitable only for the niche market i.e., photo/video, artist/editors, gamers, and the like.

In the case of most common folk, they're content with 14" (and smaller) size with the 15" being the limit and sweet spot.

An obscure but very cool notebook worth taking note of is the Nec Lavie Z. It's 2013 version is not only the lightest laptop in the world but it also has a QHD screen. The specs can be found at Dynamism. Dynamism - NEC LaVie Z

The last two laptops mentioned above have been added to the list.

Also worth noting is that the Lenovo Y50 which was revealed at CES 2014 will have a "4K" screen, 3840x2160, which would give it a 282.42 PPI at 15.6". It's not known what type of screen (IPS, PLS, IGZO) or GPU is included. Rumor is that it will be an 800M series GPU. Releases May 2014. Unless another OEM releases an Ultra HD laptop before May, this will prove to be the first such laptop with this resolution.

I'd be extremely keen to see this list show weights as well.

Seems like the new Carbon X1 is the only 14" or 15" with a high res screen under 1.5KG. Shame!

The way people go on about the miniscule weight of a laptop is beyond belief. I carried around more weight than that in books when I was in elementary school.

At this rate, in another 10 years we'll all be riding around in power chairs and complaining about the amount of resistance it takes our index finger to push the toggle forward for the thing to go. Its astounding just how lazy we humans have become. Stop it.

I agree, to a certain extent. It's a little frustrating to hear people complain that they can't have a fast CPU, lots of RAM, a hi-res screen, and long battery life, all in a tiny little package. All designs are exercises in compromise and tradeoffs.

Like they say in product design, "Fast/Cheap/Smart - pick two."

If you don't mind restricting your search to small/thin/light Intel Ultrabooks™ (and don't mind typically trading off smaller battery, lower-power processor, noisier fan, non-replaceable soldered chips), you could try the ultrabooknews ultrabook database search page which lets you select features like screen resolution and memory (but not CPU nor weight).
The Ultrabook and Ultrathin Selector « Ultrabook News and the Ultrabook Database

™ Ultrabook is a trademark of Intel Corporation in the U.S. and/or other countries.

The issue with this selector is its search is flawed.

When I checked all the High PPIs and all laptop sizes from 13.x to 14.x it returns nothing. If I give a range of RESOLUTION and SIZE, it should take those as LIMITING parameters and respond with laptops that SATISFY those CONDITIONS.

actually I need high resolution and 16gb of ram for development and virtual machine work. If I sit too long on a chair my lower back hurts so now I like working on the couch with the laptop on a lapdesk reclined. 6 lbs like my w520 on your lap of stomach reclined is too heavy. So now I use an ultrabook with FHD and 3lbs.

(Maybe accidentally another restriction checkbox was checked in another row? Maybe click "Clear Form" first?)

    Works for me:
    I
    - marked only the six 13.x and 14.x size checkboxes,
    - and the four 2.5K and 3.2K (horizontal) resolution checkboxes,
    - and clicked "Search".
    It produced a list of 8 (S7, UH90, T904, TS14, 2Pro, 9Plus, Q, Kira).
    Then I
    - clicked the "compare these results" link.
It produced a table of specs.
I see that all 8 have a screen size of 13.3in or 14.0in, and a resolution of 2560×1440 or 3200×1800, satisfying the criteria correctly.

Are there any high res 17" laptops on the horizon? Seems sucky to me to have these high res panels and not use the workspace because you scaled it to 200% for readability...

does anyone know if the kirabook is all soldered ram? I think it is but I need more than 8gb for my virtual machines. Even if it has 4gb soldered and a free slot for 8gb, 12gb is passable.

I'm pretty certain the Fujitsus (U904 & S904) have an actual RAM slot as well as some soldered.
