Lithium-ion Battery Life and Death

Hey,

Some jerk is adamant some lithium ion batteries only last a year and a half, I'm not sure how to respond to this besides swear words or calling him a liar... has anyone heres battery really failed after a year and a half?

I don't want to be paranoid, but I'm thinking this guy buys laptops, hopes (or makes) the battery die and then tries a chargeback scam through paypal after he's disinterested...

 

Yup, stay clear of him. It's not worth dealing with someone who's already making trouble before the purchase.

How's this for data?
- I've had my laptop for a little more than a year and a half now.
- I'm a university student
--- given this, my laptop battery is cycled 2-3 times a day
- it still lasts just as long as it did when I first bought it (~2:30 web browsing)

Tell that guy to stuff it somewhere dark and uncomfortable.

If you use it on battery and let it run down all the time the battery can be toast in as little as a year.

Tips for keeping them alive:
- If theres an outlet near by plug it in dont be lazy.
- Don't be afraid to top it off Li-ION loves that (The battery guage can become in accurate but its not an actual development of "memory").
- Don't let them fall below their minimum threshold.
- Don't leave them completely discharged

I've never kept a laptop long enough for the battery to degrade severely. My last laptop i let drop below 12% one time and it took a signifigant drop in capacity but not not more than 5%.

Ive had my cell phone for 3 years with its extended battery and it holds a charge for a week with light use and a day with extrmely heavy use, unlike people who let theirs run down all the time i keep myne charged.

 

hi,in general ,the replacement battery can run 500-800 cycle.That is to say that 1.5 year is common.Of course,some replacements can last 2.5 year longer.

 

My old laptop Sony TZ still have a good battery even after 3 years.

Batteries, Li-cobalt batteries especially (the ones most commonly used in laptops) are very sensitive to environmental factors, if you charge and discharge at high C rates in 100 deg. F temperature then 1/2 a year is generous, same goes for ultra cold temps. Maybe this dude is an Eskimo?

Lithium Ion technology is awesome because of its smaller size per power and especially its ability to charge quickly.
However, they do eventually discharge at a pretty fast rate. Batteries can die in just 1 year which sucks. I had one in my laptop that lasted just two years it sucks and they are expensive.

Try to get a battery with a decent warranty for that reason. Besides the burning on fire battery problem dell had, they have had problems with crappy batteries that die too quickly.

This "jerk" is stupid for saying that they only last that long but it is very possible in general. I had chemistry 2 last summer and the teacher explained differences in various batteries.

 

Yeah, a year and a half, give or take a few months, was all I got out of my Dell Latitude D830 battery, before its capacity nosedived. 9-Cell battery, and as you can see from my tagline, the laptop is fully loaded.

Every day I used the laptop, I would do probably 2, mabe 3 full cycles on it, so 500-800 cycles sounds about right.

So the comment made that laptop batteries only last that long is accurate for heavy users, and I definitely concur.
