    Hi,

Ive just got my Western Digital 2,5" 500gb WD5000BEVT and installed it. Ive run HD tune but is a little bit confused regarding the access time, it is no less than 21 ms... all other disks tested with HD tune has had access time around 17 ms, see my HD tune results.

Do you folks think this abnormaly high, should I return the disk? I guess I wont notice any difference between 21or 17 ms...?

    Greatful for answers...

    Brgrds Alexander

    Hi.

I have an WD5000BEVT and it varies from 16.5 to 19ms , I think you need a clean boot with no other software accessing the hdd to get a real reading.

    Regards

    John.

Ok, thanks for the answer but I get even higher results with the original Fujutsu 4200 rpm (Sony Vaio FW 11S) with transfer rates, average 30mb per sec at the same conditions...?
And how am i cleaning my boot, Ive already run perfect disk...?

There's no reason to believe that the HDD itself has a problem. It's more likely that the other programs running on your computer are creating a time delay.

Are background applications such as anti-virus software disabled during the test?

17ms is quite normal for a 5400rpm drive of that capacity. Infact, my 320GB 7200rpm Scorpio doesn't fair much better at 16ms or so.

There are ways to improve access times, like partitioning the first section of the drive for your main operating system. You won't be able to benchmark it, but it'll make a small difference (that you'll likely not notice).

A few ms off isnt really a big deal.

Make sure you close all unnecessary process before doing the benchmark. It can use up HD bandwidth and interfere with the scores.

How about noice, is the Western Digital 2,5" 500gb WD5000BEVT noicy?

My opinion is that it is quite noicy, sounds much more than the WD 7200 rmp 320 gb in the same machine, a Sony Fw 11S. I got really tired in my ears listening on this, like a fan buzzing. I could say about 3 times louder than the 7200 rpm. Its not very lound or someting, the 7200rpm was very quitet.

Either its anyting wrong with my driver (in addition to above) or its just a fact that it sounds more, what do you think of this?

I think that that access time is fairly normal and really not worth worrying about. I'm sure there are some tweaks you could make, but probably none that would make a noticeable difference.
