Is it a bad idea? Because I actually much prefer using my laptop on my bed (with hardcover book underneath) and lap (I switch between the two). I just want to know if theres any long term effects like the laptop overheating quicker/easier or possibly this.
Bad Effects on Having Laptop on Your Lap

If it's sitting on a book so that the FEET are touching the book and not the base of the laptop itself, it's fine. If you block off the vents with a book flat against the laptop, it'll run incredibly hot. It doesn't matter where you are.

overheating the family jewels will cause sterility. seriously.

-
As long as the laptop doesn't get so hot that it shuts off, you're fine. You can't cause any damage.

Sigh... as long as it has a good cooling system and no vents are blocked, intake or exhaust, i'm using my big ole' W700 17" on my bed right now on a pillow and the CPU is 30C and GPU 35C.... and that's a 17" system.

That is one of the reasons why I do not want to get rid of my 6920G. It has a large vent on the top of the subwoofer at the top of the laptop and uses this for main cooling. You can lie it on your bed and it never heats up and when you close the lid it opens the entire vent and stays around 40oc

I never use my laptop on a bed. There is so much dust and other particles on your bed. Be prepared for a clogged fan if you do it often.
-
Well you actually dont have to worry about it.If it overheats ,then it willshut off automatically.Long term effects-probably no!

i used to use my laptops sometime on the bed and it used to heat up like hell while watching youtube.. now with a notebook cooling pad ,doesn't heat up.. as long as u prop it up , shouldn't be a problem but i still don't recommend it.. especially for ur family jewels..

My temps hover around 42-46C, is that ok? Any way to get it down?

can you tell those so called "some components"
I wanna be aware -
air flow air flow air flow. Read and Believe.
If you even think you are blocking air flow, you probably are.
Why even take a chance? -
If the machine isn't stupidly heavy/bulky then one of these will definitely be steady enough to hold it on a bed.
Easy Riser Notebook Stand - Ns | Ebuyer.com
Angle adjustable and it will keep those temps down too.
Not for lap use though. . . -

I hope this thread is a joke. Since the most fundamental guidelines in computer operation is to keep it cool. As for the second part, your biological and physiological health is a matter best discussed in different website.

@the joker
even a 2yr old kid will tell that.I know proc, gpu, chipset, hdd will overheat lolz.I was asking about the components that you mentioned will damage b4 computer shuts off lolz. Think and answer! -
-
Lets try not to be too much of a smart aleck when we post, ok? -
Dude you seriously did not get my question.I asked what are the components that GETS DAMAGED before shut down. You cannot answer because there arent any component that gets damaged.Computer sensors know better than us when to do what!
-
Moral of the story: It can be damaged while running/on. -
also, the lifespan of the hard drive is reduced if its running hot all the time -
-
Well it was your fault. Its like you are mixing the situations and giving a conclusion.Your sensors may be damaged,So it cudnt turn off itself. But its not like that for EVERY OTHER laptop. My sensors work perfectly and i am not worried about it!
