I cant find many websites that carry mobile CPU's that ship to Canada. I am thinking of a future upgrade over my T8300 CPU in my ASUS M51SN laptop as I am needing the extra power for my VMs. Anyone know where I can get a Quad Core CPU that is compatible with the Mobile Intel PM965 Express Chipset?

I might just get a DELL XPS.

Ok, just FYI no quad core will work with the PM965.

Yes the Q9000 will not work. You can only use a cpu with an 800mhz FSB, sorry :(

But I can help you overclock if you want.

lol I am not sure if I can OC this Asus to well. I Oced it to 2.8Ghz and my network card craped out even at 2.5 Ghz.

You could get an X7900, at 2.8GHz, might be able to pick one up for relatively cheap and the PM965 will take it no problems except that if the temp sensors are analog, you will get a BIOS error every time you start up, it's nothing big just an annoyance, because the CPU temp sensor inside the processor core is digital.

Yea I might if I can find one cheap. I am thinking of just getting an Dell XPS or another gaming laptop sooner or later. I was hoping I could find a C2 quad compatible with my chipset. Has anyone successfully OCed an ASUS M51SN? I wasn't sure you could overclock it.

I put a penryn in my tecra A9 (PM965) and there was no error.
    The temp sensor worked fine.

@OP, is your CPU unstable or your ram?

    You should try this:
Run OTHOS on the "stress CPU" setting.
Then run ORTHOS on the "blend" setting.

If it's stable on the "stress CPU" setting but it fails the "blend" setting, then you know that the ram is unstable.

You can use thaiphoon burner to flash a lower frequency onto your ram to make it stable.

I might be able to even get a T9300, but I am thinking a new laptop is in ordinance.

The T9300 isn't much faster than the T8300, especially in the sense that the performance difference isn't big enough to justify the price difference.

higher cashe 6mb vs 3mb it will help in VM's but since quad core isn't an option, I might get a new laptop all together.

Kinda expensive for a last-generation Q9000, with a low display resolution for a 16" on top of that. Also, unless if you game (and I'm assuming you don't since your stated purpose for this topic was running VM's) the GPU is overkill and you're paying for something you'll never use.

Of course, this all changes if you have a price match ready ;)

yea I suppose I don't really want to shell another $500 for an i7 setup, I am going to wait until DDR3 is cheaper and faster, as well as the availability of Express slot 2.0 and USB 3.0. Hopefully in 2010 this will happen. I am an occasional gamer btw.
