I've got an HP 8510p. I'd like to replace the existing DVD burner with a combo drive that has light scribe. I've looked at the NEC ND 6650A, but it does not have light scribe. Can anyone recommend any other brands?

Slimline Lghtscribe burners are being slow to enter the retail chain. One drive which has been around since late last year is the Toshiba-Samsung TS-L632M. Another is the Liteon SSM-85H5S which is in the retail chain in Europe.

One alternative is to buy this external slot loader and then rip it apart. Inside is a standard slimline slot-loading drive. There's one catch: The drive defaults to 4X DVD speed because it is expecting a signal from the enclosure that it is on external power and can run at a full 8X. In other respects it is a nice burner.

I had one of those Toshiba-Samsung drives. I had skipping issues with it when burned at full speed.

I have yet to find a lightscribe user that really likes it :/

    Long burn times, expensive media.

Average joe is better off with a sharpie to mark disks, the person seeking something better is better off with a printer made to print onto disk as the quality is higher than lightscribe and the cost overall is cheaper. Its a win/win.
