    Hello,

I want to buy a 3.5" HDD to use externally in USB box.

    Capacity to be 320-350 GB

I do not care if it is SATA or PATA ...but it has to be:
    a) RELIABLE.
    b) QUIET and COOL.
    c) the faster the better.

    What would be your choices?

    Thanks

Get a Seagate if you care about reliability and performance (they offer the longest warranty in the industry). Get a Samsung if having a hard drive that is cool and quiet is most important to you.

Seagate offers the best warranty. They're also known for their quality hard drives. Most Seagate drives have a 5 year warranty.

Western Digital is the other giant in hard drive technology. Their cheaper models offer a 3 year warranty, but their slightly more expensive (+$10 to $20) server/RAID-optimized hard drives also carry a 5-year warranty. Those special optimized hard drives are specifically designed not to fail.

Seagate 7200.10 FTW. It is one of the fastest SATA drives out there, other then the WD Raptor. I used to use one in my workstation before I moved to my notebook full time.

Seagate or WD 320gb 16mb drives.
Raptors are old news, what with the much larger platter densities nowadays. They simply are not worth the price premium.

Remember, a USB box is going to kill the performance anyway.Go for the slowest and largest drive (5400RPM will be more than enough).
