I have Sager M570TU, and the vid card has been limping along for a while. I've had it reballed and it ran for 4 months and now I tweak it once every few days to keep it running.

I'm looking to buy a replacement for my 9800m GT and I've been searching on ebay for a replacement.

According to this, MXM technical before 3.0, Type HE card, which is what i have, simply has a power tab for extra power, but otherwise is the same as a Type III. Could I buy a Type III or a Type II to replace my 9800m GT, something like this
New NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GT 512MB DDR3 MXM III for Acer 8930G Alienware M9700 | eBay

Also what would you guys recommend to replace this? I plan on replacing this in 5 months so I don't need to break any records, I'm just gonna run the occasional game or so.

You can upgrade to GTX 260m, 280m or FX 3700/3800.

But I don't think it's a necessary upgrade if you're changing your laptop in a few months. I'd go with the cheapest I find on ebay.

What are the ones I can downgrade to? Since the cheapest ones for upgrading I've found are 200ish unfortunately.

Thanks for the help guys. I suppose I'll just keep looking on ebay. Are there any other possible downgrades? maybe to an ATI?

Well the laptop you have is pretty decent (considering the technology it has).
If I was in your shoes, I would sooner try to upgrade the thing... both the cpu and gpu (seeing how you have pretty good options for gpu upgrades, go with that before anything else - at the very least, you could continue using the thing for some time to come) and the cpu you could upgrade to could be Core2Quad if I'm not mistaken.
In such a scenario you could hold off buying a new laptop for another year (at least) instead of 5 months - but if you really are set on getting a new laptop (which is not a bad idea considering that Haswell won't really bring anything groundbreaking), then consider getting the 260m or 280m for gpu replacement.

I have a 4870 which is very likely to be fully compatible. You have to make 2 more quality posts before you can PM me, or you can email me at my username @gmail.com
The 4870 is on par with the GTX 280m.

You can't exactly "downgrade". Although all MXM 2.1 cards should work, the heatsink will NOT fit a smaller type II MXM card. Also, pretty much all the nvidia MXM 2.1 cards you can get are defective.

I don't think the original backplate will fit the card in the Ebay auction you linked.

That's the other main thing I was concerned about, I didn't want to drop $150-$200 on another nvidia card only to have it fail on me a few months down the road.

So I found a brand new HP 8710w FX 3600m. It looks like it'll fit and be compatible with my heatsink as well. I was wondering if I'll need to flash the vBIOS since it's a HP or if I can just throw it in my machine and start working?
