    Hey

My currrent drive ST9160827AS is problably dying as Ubuntu complains about it and sometimes it is VERY slow when it comes to booting and sometimes just freezes Windows up. It actually cannot boot Ubuntu any more and Windows sometimes. I want to replace it ASAP.

It seems, because of this, I want a free fall sensor on my drive to prevent this in another situations. Im currently looking at the ST9500325ASG as a alternative. Can anyone recommened something else/better? And please, quick replies deserve a BIG thank you as Im ordering the new drive ASAP and backing up all the data and moving to this new HDD as soon as I order it.

Please keep it in the 5400RPM region as my battery is messed up and I want to further conserve my battery life.

    Thanks for all the help.

The WD3200BJKT you mentioned looks good but it is too bad it is limited to only 320GB and is 7200RPM. My battery life is ed up already lol....

Is the ST9500325ASG bad or something?

dunno, if your ST9160827AS is dying in 1.5 years do you still wanna bet in ST9500325ASG ?
actually except if you often drop your notebook, a non-free fall sensor drive is fine. :)

Well my notebook doesnt drop but it did, like said, died in about 1.5 years so I think a free fall sensor might help right?

And Seagate has the longest guarantee (5 years) right? I dont mind switching to WD but Id just like to get a long lasting HDD with alot of space (320GB is kinda slim)

stay away from seagate drives... they have a tendency to fail... get the scropio black which is 320GB and 7200rpm or the 500GB hitachi 7K500... personally i would get the 7K500 as it is newer and faster... Don't worry of battery life... this drive is more power efficient and if u need more battery life , u can undervolt the CPU like i do... See the link for the undervolting guide below

I've have a Seagate 7200.4 and had a Hitachi 7k500. In typical notebook usage you're unlikely to notice a difference unless you copy/paste files all day. I'd buy on price.

I want to thank EVERYONE for their quick replies. Thanks alot again :)

I guess their (Seagate) desktop drives are great but not their laptop drives.

I have to worry about my battery life as my battery's capacity is ed up so it was the HDD or the battery. Obviously I can work plugged in so I had to go with the HDD.

And I am not OK with undervolting my CPU :)

    Thanks for your suggestion.

It is too bad there is not a 5400rpm version.

Could you post a model number for that Seagate 7200.4? Thank you :)

Im guessing the 5400rpm version are the:

    Travelstar 5K500.B
    Travelstar 5K500
    Travelstar E5K500

The only difference is what are the differences between these 3 drives?

I just put two of Hitachi's 7K500 drives in my laptop, and they are very quiet and fast drives. The two of them make less noise than the one WD 320GB drive the HP came with. Got the first one to replace what I thought was a dead drive, only to find out that I had a corrupt mbr, which my son fixed AFTER I made the purchase. There was some confusion with the way TigerDirect labeled the drive on their site, and Hitachi had one of their partners (CDW) sell me a second one at Tiger's price. In the end, the confusion was baseless and now I have a 7K500 in each of my two drive bays,... 1TB!

You can't go wrong with the Hitachi drive,... can't go wrong with the WD Scorpio Black either. But if those extra 180 GB are important to you, the Hitachi is a no-brainer. The clear winner! I've been warned by many to stay far far away from Seagate at this moment.

Did you have a chance to glance at Phil's review?

The 7K500 sounds like a great drive I just dont like another battery drainer (7200rpm) in a laptop who's battery is already messed up.

I would be intrested in the 5K500 but noone says nothing...

What's wrong with undervolting? its simple and it does increase battey life... I was also like u but now i undervolt quite a bit and does help my lousy battery life... Nothing dangerous in it except for BSOD...

Thank you for you suggestion but I simply do not wish to undervolt :)

Since there are no opinions on those drives, can someone at least tell me the difference between the 3? I, unless im blind (which I problably am :p ) cant see any.

Another 7200rpm? Thanks but my battery is ed up (20 minutes only when it use to do 1 hour and a half; Alot older laptops I have here around are still about 70-80% capacity and do alot more time than this one here and this one has only about a year and a half) and It was this or the battery. Obiously the PC cannot work without a HDD (well not for my needs at least) so it had to be this. A 7200rpm HDD would further kill my battery life

    If you want 5400rpm then WD5000BEVT / WD6400BEVT or Hitachi 5K500.B
No free fall sensor, but those drives are good

    PS. You can't use 5K500 because it's 12.5mm height, 5K500.B is normal 9.5mm height

edit: but today technology has advanced, most of the current 7200rpm drives are really efficient in battery life.

Yes, they are efficient in battery but the 5400rpm are the same as efficient and since they still are 5400rpm they will consume less...

Not really upgrading; This is replacing :)

The only thing I would "upgrade" is the disk space.

Im starting to get copy errors :( Thank god Ive setup SyncBackPro to start syncing everything...

    Well to break it down:

    WD6400BEVT: 114.83 euros
    WD5000BEVT: 81.64 euros
    5K500.B: 100 euros

Im problably going to go with the WD5000BEVT. Tommorow is monday so unless someone has some second thoughts I will order this drive tommorow as Im pretty much sure that my drive is going to die in any momento :( Thanks everyone for their help.

My head is still itching about the free fall sensor :p But I guess if it has been commented that I really dont need it, then I guess I wont.

Just out of being curious does anyone know the free fall sensor version for those 3 drives above (WD6400BEVT, WD5000BEVT, and 5K500.B)

I'm on my second 5000BEVT...it's a great drive in terms of space and it's pretty speedy. With all of that space, make sure you have a good backup plan and action in place! I recently paid 72 after taxes for a new bare drive...the first one I bought about a year and a half ago came out of an external drive---and now it's back in it's enclosure until I can send it back to WD-SMART error due to an over-the-threshold Reallocated Sector count.

I got all of my data off the old drive just as it was failing. The new one is slightly noisier than the old one...every few seconds, I can hear a very faint noise from the read heads parking. The old one was extremely quiet until it started having CRC errors...and then things went downhill.

to bad, I missed this thread I would have suggested to get a SSD, maybe the 80GB intel. 1.2million hours run time + 1500G of force tolerance. This would work assuming you don't have a large amount of data on your laptop (I have a media server for that)

The specs looked good for 2.5" and 1.8" SSDs until I did some deeper digging. It wasn't too rosy, based on the newegg reviews.
