I'd like to keep it at 5400 RPM for battery life, but I can pick up an 80GB 5400RPM on Newegg for just about $100. How easy is it to remove and replace the drive? I know Dell's warranty won't cover damages caused by my own hardware, but a new hard drive won't cause my system to die. So basicaly what's the process going to be like?

It should be pretty easy, I believe dell has guides to do it yourself.
It's pretty much, Flip the laptop over, unscrew a few screws, take harddrive out, take casing off harddrive, put new hard drive in casing, put HD with casing back into laptop, put cover on, screw it back on. -
I've had my hard drive out before on my old I5150 on a techie call, so I know that process fairly well. I'm mainly wanting to know if there's anything special or counter-intuitive that needs done to ensure it functions properly.

Doubt it, it's pretty simple to switch HD/RAM on laptops.

Yeah, my RAM upgrade was in and out in 2 minutes.
Looking to upgrade the hard drive on my Inspiron 6000
