Hi, I have a 3 year old Acer Aspire 5043 and the original HD stopped working after about 7 months of a VERY VERY slow and degrading performance.
Then I bough a seagate 160GB IDE and after about 1 month it started getting slow, and after 3 months, it stopped working completly.
Anyone seen this before? Could it be an eletrical problem in my home or an internal notebook issue?
thanks

One of the issues is, that you bought a seagate, which doesn't have the best reliability record.
That may have been the second cause of failure, not the notebook itself. -
It is not a home electrical problem
Closing up laptops while they are still shutting down/sleeping can cause problems
You need to be a bit more specific than "started getting slow" if we are to diagnose the "real problem"
Andrew, I don't know the reliable brand of HDD, maybe you could share ? -

WD ftw...

Hitachi or WD

Fairly well documented problems with notebooks being closed sharply to trigger shutdown into sleep. Head crashes result.
Large maker of non-windows laptops involved . . can say no more -
well, duh, slamming operating hard drives is a sure way to kill a machine.
no smiley needed, or "secret" revelations either. -

Well I can't have their lawyers writing to me any more
I am sure you have all worked it out

Thanks everybody for the input, I just might give a shot at a 3rd HD

...while you're at it try a non-Seagate. WD is definitely my preferred brand.

if you are buying a lot of hard drives, try to spread your purchases (diff stores and/or spread out over time) out so as to have a chance of getting drives from different production lots.
Lost 2 HDs in 6 months. Eletrical malfunction?
