    Hello!

Ive bought a 200GB 7K200 Hitachi HDD and at the mo I am using it in my caddy. I am slightly concerned as it makes noises like it had a bad head or something. Does your 7K200 make quite loud noise while accessing data??

    Thanks!

No I actually havent tried these yet.
Im only concerned if it is usual for this drive to produce this kind of noises.
I dont want to send it back saying its faulty and getting it back because there is nothing wrong with it.

I think you should send it back. I have a 7k200 in my 8510p and it doesn't really make any sound at all. I just hear the 8510p's fan

Mine is very quiet too - as quiet or even quieter than the 5400rpm drive that came with my MBP.

I've got an 80GB 7200RPM Hitachi Travelstar 7K100 and it's pretty loud i guess when accessing information. I can hear the tiny clicks it makes. i was hoping it would be quieter...

Well, mine seems to be having a clicking noise all the time hdd needs to access the drive, either writing or reading. I have had a bad 3.5" hdd once and it sounds quite similar to that but im not sure.

My 80gb 7k200 is the most quiet HD I have ever owned, and doesnt make any noticeable noises when reading/writing, booting up/shutting down, or any time. Its very very quiet.

I remember using acoustic management tool on my desktop HDD. Once altered, the parameters are stored in the drive's EEPROM. It made a night and day difference.

They're probably shipping drives set to less aggressive performance to ensure customer satisfaction and reduce RMA. Average joe is going to care more about the annoying access sound than slightly reduced performance.

I'm on a Hitachi 160GB 5400rpm and it's also whisper quiet. Only when Vista is violating the drive do I hear clickity-clicks :p

But yeah, I know my old Samsung PATA 80GB drive clicked all the time. Not like...click click click, but it would click every 10-20 seconds. Fellow owners figured that it was the drive unloading the heads to save power, but then if you moved the laptop it might frak up the HDD by scratching the platter. So I was kind of worried! Samsung never acknowledged a problem, even after I sent the first one in (they just sent me a new one that also clicked...by design I guess!).

Either way...clicking "all" the time is definitely not good IMO.

I have two 7k200 200giggers in raid 0, and I cant even hear them.

Then again, I cant hear any harddrive noise, as the fans are always on full and they definitely drain out and cover up any of the noise generated by the harddrives.

I have 3 of the 7k200's in my laptop and I can't hear them. I've had mine for about 6 months now with no problems and no noise, no fans running.

Note that HDD noise also depends on the location of the HDD in the notebook and the build of the notebook. The same HDD mounted under a palmrest (the usual location) can sound a lot different in different notebooks depending on how well the noise is screened. Hitachi HDDs in high performance mode are noisier than most.

Ive tried the silent mode and it still generates those clicks, although they are much more quiet and happen less often I will still send it back. Just need to find a place for my 90GB of data... ;(
