Hi all. Looking for some assistance re: Intel Rapid Storage driver. My MSI GS65 came with two Samsung PM981 nvme drives in it. I noticed that the RST tray icon kept saying "RST service not running" so I uninstalled it and planned to re-install using the package available on MSI's website. However, when I click to install I get "platform not supported". Is RST not needed/supported when using strictly nvme drives? Thanks in advance for any help

First of all, go into your BIOS and look at your settings, I think it's in the Advanced Tab, see if you're in AHCI or RAID mode then get back to me so we can tackle this futher.Dr. AMK likes this. -
Thanks Phoenix. Will do. I’m not using RAID by the way. Just have the two drives separate

you do NOT need the IRST app unless you have a RAID Array to tweak some settings like disabling power link management and/or enabling Write Back Cache for increased performance
go ahead and uninsall it and never look back again.
you just need the NVMe Driver from Samsung
After downloading the file, right click on it, go to properties, then hit unblock on the bottom then apply then ok to have the driver properly installed.
Do this for all your downloads by the wayLast edited: Jun 16, 2018 -
Great thank you! The nvme driver was going to be my next question. Lol

You don't need the Samsung nVME driver though it can give marginal improvements, but at least with the previous 3X firmware on the 960 Pro the Samsung driver caused lockups (known issue) under certain work loads (ie Hyper-V) while the built in nVME drivers from MS (nvstore) worked great. Having said that the newer 3.0 Samsung drivers are improved.
Here's a good explanation of RAID-ON vs AHCI, also note that the IRST installer also has AHCI drivers for AHCI mode in addition to iaStore.

I personally just use MS built in (nvstore) nVME drivers with bios set to AHCI mode, performance will be the same, as Phoenix mentioned and even Intel's own reps say its not very useful outside of an actual RAID use. However Dell and some others set their laptops to RAID ON for certain SSDs to use customized drivers which apparently take advantage of the port remapping for what exactly I do not know.Last edited: Jun 16, 2018 -
Hmm ok. Well I already installed the latest Samsung driver. Guess I’ll see how it goes
M.2 nvme and Intel RST
