The 8400M GS video card on my Dell M1330 idles at 69/70C. I'm using HW-Monitor and GPU-Z, and both show this temp. GPU-Z shows that the fan is always running at 100%. Is this normal for the M1330? Any suggestions as to how to lower these temps?

I have not modded it in anyway other than undervolting the CPU, but that should lower temps, not raise them. Just as a note, I am also using plugging this video card into a 1920x1080 monitor and am running Forceware 186.81 nVidia drivers. Not sure if this will affect temps but just putting it out there.

    thanks!

When was the last time you cleaned your vents and fan? If the gpu is idling, the fan is running full blast and the temperature is not going down, it looks like your vents are definitely clogged.

i actually just had the motherboard replaced recently, and the dell service tech cleaned out everything. there is a possibility that he may have blocked one of the vents when he replaced the motherboard and put everything back together, but i doubt it.

First of all, even though GPUZ says the fan is running at 100%, is the fan actually running at 100%? It may be that GPUZ is wrong (and I've definitely seen it be wrong on things like this) or it may be that the machine THINKS the fan's running at 100%, but it's actually unplugged or something.

If everything's actually fine with the fan, and it actually is running full blast all the time, I'd take a look at the contact between the GPU and the CPU/GPU heatsink. The thermal pad or the heatsink itself might be poorly installed and not coming into full contact with the GPU...

i can hear the fan constantly running, but i dont' know if it's running at 100%. is there any other program I can use to determine this so that I can double check GPU-Z?

The GPU's clocks might be at the highest when you are powering a monitor. What are the temps without the monitor (for say half an hour)?

the GPU is now idling on 60-62C. Not at the 70C levels prior, but still fairly hot I think. I can still hear the fans running constantly though, and GPU-Z stills says fans are running 100%. Should this warrant a dell service call, do you think?

edit: this recording was done after letting the computer idle for 12 full hours plugged only to AC. CPU temps are 35-40C, just for reference.

That's normal. Just do the copper mod and your load and idle temps will drop.

Also, undervolting the CPU will help as it shares the same heatsink as the GPU.
