The XPS1530 supports a maximum of 8GB of Pc5300/Pc6400 memory.
The XPS has two memory slots, so you can install a maximum of 4Gb into each memory slot, giving you a 2 x 4Gb configuration.
Sure you can alwasy simply upgrade to lower memoy quntities, like 3,4,5 or 6Gb as well.
To know what memory you have installed. Power your laptop down, flip it over and remove the lower plastic cover.
Underneath the cover you will gain access to your memory cards and the cpu/gpu. If your system has a single 2gb memory card, than i think your best bet for memory upgrade is to put a single 2gb stick in the empty slot, or a 4gb memory stick into that slot.
If you have two 1Gb memory cards occupying both slots, I would buy a single 2 or 4Gb card to replace one of the original 1Gb sticks.

Good luck with the memory upgrade.
Make sure to go to Dell's website and install the latest bios for your system, so that you can use more than 4Gb of memory.

You will only be able to have 2 sticks installed at a time, so yes, if you want to put a 2 GB one in, you'll have to take out a 1 GB one first. You can try selling it, but the market for 1 GB modules is extremely saturated, so don't expect much. It might be better to keep it so if you ever have to send the notebook in for warranty you can send it in with the original, smaller modules, or so that if one of the new ones stops working you can swap an old one back in.

With the latest BIOS updates, you can put up to 8 GB in the XPS 1530. 4 GB modules are much more expensive than 2 GB ones, though, so I don't advise going that route unless you actually need more than 4 GB.
