For a while now, my M1730's been having heat issues. Defective hardware or other factors may play in. After much pondering, I've decided not to send it back to Dell and take my chances with an off-warranty machine.
I've been using I8kFanGUI to speed up the fans and cool the GPUs, but there's a couple concerns I have.
1. Will having the fans on max at all times hurt my fan in any way?
2. Are the high-setting fans supposed to start and momentarily stop and restart?
3. It's displayed on HWMonitor that I only have 2 of my fans operating at full capacity, the other last one (which I presume to be the fan assigned to GPU 2) is not kicking in.
Thank you.

1. It'll probably kill the lifespan of the fan itself.
2. That sounds like the fan is already dying.
3. From what I know, HWMonitor for laptops is either N/A, wildly inaccurate depending on your model, or somewhat right. You shouldn't rely on it too much.... does that notebook even have more than 2 fans? -

Honestly I've only ever seen one fan, but I've never worked on a 1730 or a notebook with an MXM card either, so if it does have more than 2 fans, I'd love to know what dell was thinking when they designed the internal airflow. Unless it has one on each corner, with 2 seperate heatsinks, one being for the cpu/northbridge/southbridge and one for the GPU. This is interesting!

It will shorten the life of the fans, as they aren't designed to operate like that all the time.
Since you say that the M1730 has had heat issues for a while now, I presume that it didn't run that hot when you bought it, correct?
In that case, I recommend that you clean out the heatsink and fans, by taking it apart, and using compressed air to blow the dust out. Long term build up of dust will make the laptop run hotter over time, and most laptops are due for a cleaning every 2 years or so. Gaming laptops like yours should be cleaned out even more often. -

What's good for measuring laptop temperatures?
I8kFanGUI says my GPU is 40 idle and I'm convinced I'm dreaming. -

Hopefully I'll know when I get one in June or July this year, I'm still saving up my money, and that's kind of hard when you don't have a job. -
In all of the Dell laptops I have owned, I have run the fans at full speed. One of my laptops which is an everday users has over 15,000hrs on it, and one of my older rigs has over 35,000hrs on it. The fan will not burn out when it is running at full speed all of the time.
To answer your other question, the fan pulsating.
This is not a hardware error. It is the software doing that. This happens on the XPS1710 and 1730. You need to go into the I8KFANGUI settings and enable the autostart and BIOS workarounds. It will work without pulsating after that.
Good luck,

Would this mean I8FanGUI would be a valid temperature reader? It and HWMonitor tell me completely different temperatures. -

If I can put up with your comments I can put up with the noise.
Laptop fans generally are not that loud.

To the OP, trust HWmonitor. I've never heard of this other program you're using, but HWmonitor has a good reputation for being very reliable. -
lol K-Tron , u really show off sometimes and ppl off.... some of us here aren't as smart as u so u don't need to show off and make us mad... we also don't have access to stuff like u do so plz stop... and back off..
